Hello all, Gordon here. Brand spankin' new member. I have a Buck 110 and I'd like to replace stock handles with buffalo horn scales. Here's my question. I want to under cut the front and rear bolters a little bit on the scale sides and do away with the handle pins. Any thoughts? Good idea bad idea? And if I did this, what's the safest way to remove the bolters and peen them back? Any advice, sarcasm and general harassment will be appreciated.

It's a good project to replace the scales and with the right tools, not too hard to do. Lots of video help on YouTube. Bolsters, not so much. Never seen it done. Maybe it'll be simpler to bring the bolsters down using an abrasive wheel. You might try it on an old and abused 110 from a pawn shop, first.

Yes sir, I was considering a metal file in place but I'm worried about taking off material on the spring/blade pivot retaining plates. I forget the correct name for those. Using a beat down to practice a couple different methods seems the safest way. Thanks for the reply!

Well, I did it. Figured doing it through struggles and mishaps is a good learning tool. I replaced handles with brown buffalo horn, did some filework on the back spring and threw in some mosain pins. I have pictures of it after the first round of sanding.....amazing what polishing brings out! I'll post pics as soon as I figure out how. I see lots of room for improvement and trying to undercut the bolters now seems like it wasn't worth the work.

Congratulation! Can't wait to see the pics. So what's your next project going to be? I mean, after getting us our pictures, of course. ;)

Thanks! I don't think I have permissions to post images at this point. I will have to read the forum rules on image posting. Not sure of what may be next. I grew up watchin a freind of mines dad do this and I always wanted to try. Never had the nerve to have him teach me, I just watched.
