Buck 110 vs Bear Paw

The Buck family including their family of employees have over the years earned every bit of praise they have recieved here. I have many and love them all. Their customer service is great as is their products. I have met Chuck Buck and he is a class act in many ways. Proud of his Company name and not affraid to evangelize his faith.

So having said all that I did't know all that about thirty years ago when I went out to purchase my first "big folder." Just by blind fate I came home with a Schrade LB7 wich is pretty much identical to a Buck 110. As a young teen it was my only camp knife used for everything from cleaning fish to making fire wood. And I camped a lot. As a carpenter it has been used many years to cut sheetrock, wire, banding material and who knows what else. It has stood the test of time with honor.

As I said I have Bucks too that have been used in similar ways and stood up just as well. I am just saying I honestly couldn't pick a winner between the two. At least untill you consider the Buck family factor. And in fairness to the Schrade customer service, I have never had need to use them.

Hey Boink, easy with that olden days stuff!!! :D If the QC today is half as good as 30 years ago, the 110 is still a hell of a tool.

Buck have an excellent offer - you may order custom 110 with Bg42 (or 154CM) and this is BG-42 (or 154CM) heat treated by Boss. You just have call them and ask for Sara.
I have one - excellent cutter, one of my sharpest knives!

Thanks, Vassili.

Boink, I've got a 112 from 1974 (my first Buck) and the biggest things I've noticed are Product Improvements. Specifically : different grinding,E2K, rounding of the knife in general, a couple of internal changes, and pioneering of their heat treat.I didnt mention blade steel because 440C is a good steel that was changed for cost and machinability reasons.
The only variances I have noted on their core group (110,112,100 series fixed, 700's 500's,)Is that once in a great while the edge in the curve isnt even from side to side. This probably occures because they are edged by hand.(the right way) That takes a couple of sharpenings to work out, no big deal.

Sounds like things have improved from the days of yore!

:)

This Buck 110 is very interesting, for the history they have and that so many remain in use.

I have both and can say that both are great knives. As for my favorite, I really don't know as they are both so similar that I can't find a real distinction.
Matt

Thanks for all the great info. I think the best thing to do would be buy both. Let's see the 110 for me and the Bear Paw for my 10yr old son. I think mom will go for it?
:)

For your 10yr. old son, the 112 would be a better choice(well not even that, I'd get a Victorinox SAK for a 10yr. old). Good luck trying to get mom agree with you getting your son a knife at that age! :D

I, Like ever one else on the planet has at one time owned a 110. I bought 4 from Petes custom. had to send three back. Stag scales 1/8 INCH THICKER on one side vs the other. Blade play was unreal. On one ( I measured it 1/16 in either direction. 1/8 total. The damascus on one was covered with a thick HARD black substance. On one when locked open if you gave it a fairly mild slap it would unlock. The interesting thing is I pulled out an off the shelf 110 and the quality was better then all three. I sent them back , they corrected the problems but BLADE PLAY is my NO NO. I pulled out 5 Case pocket knives in the $30.00 range . ZERO blade play. The Bucks were Semi-Custom knives at five times the price. They say their blade play is within their tolerences, They need to talk to Case about blade play. This really sucks because I REALLY like the 110s. I also haven't said anything here that I haven't conveyed to their customer service department WHICH IS GREAT. Maybe it was just poor timing. These were purchased about a year past so I may wind up eating crow
Buck is a wonderful Co. but Case now has a very cool traditional looking folder WITH A CLIP. :D JUST MY EXPERIENCE Don't know squat about Bear Paw.
