i just picked up a new buck 110 with a leather sheath for $20 (after rebate). what do you guys think of the 110 as a general purpose camp/field blade??

The Buck 110 is one of the best knives out there. It will serve you well as a camp/field knife for many years. It's lasted for forty years and is still going strong.:D

My all time favorite folder. It must be considering I have about 50 in my collection.:D

Good camp knife. One is in each of our backpacks here.

For hiking, I like the cordura/nylon sheath better. Dries faster if it gets wet and is a little lighter than the leather. If I used the leather, I'd treat it with some kind of good sealant (Nikwax or SnoSeal) in case of rain.

If you dont mind me asking, where did you find it for that price? I think that I would take several. good stocking stuffers at that price.

I got my first one around 1974 and still use them. They have a history back to use in the Vietnam war. I still rotate between 2 2-dot 110's and a newer 112 which I think I like even more as it's size makes it more prone to have along.

Wal-mart has a nice 110 boxed gift set for a tad over 23 dollars.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better all around field folder.

get a one armed bandit from smkw for about 5 bucks and it's very easy to open with one hand.

Concur. One of the best value general purpose knives ever made.
Best $20+ you will ever spend.

I prefer Made in U.S.A. Bucks, and the only issue I have heard about 110's is the weight issue. :)

Love it! That was my first fix bladed knife I got when I was a kid. Which.... My parents didn't know about till years after the fact. :o

Great knife. For years I hunted, fished, hiked and camped with a 110 and it never let me down.

Back in the 80's in the Army we would carry Buck 110s on our belts under our BDU shirts. We used to pin Armor insignia, Airborne wings etc. on the front of the pouch. Served me well several years of tanking and I still have it!
Great knife. Thanks for the memory trip.

Wade, there are several Xmas deals going on that I've seen:

1) Gander Mountain has a $10 rebate going on the Buck 110 with leather sheath. Puts the after-rebate price around $20.

2) Academy Sports has been selling the 110 with leather sheath for $18.63.

3) Wal-Mart has been selling 110 gift sets in a tin. They include a 110, a keychain/bottle opener (shape of a buck), and a much thinner nylon sheath--not the normal nylon/cordura thickness. These are selling for about $23.

In the display cases, Walmart also sells the 110 with the thicker nylon/cordura sheath. What some folks have done (myself included) is to get Walmart to price-match the Academy sale price for these knives. I did so because I prefer the thick nylon over the leather.

I wound up buying four--one as a Christmas present and three to send in later on for blade swaps (BG-42 or ATS-34). The Buck Custom Shop will do that service for $35 per knife.

Go over to the Buck forum and check out two threads--one on the Walmart knives and the other on Academy Sports. I think there's a way to download the Academy sale flyer, which you can print out and take to Walmart for a possible price match.

Good luck.

guyon is correct. i bought mine at gndr mtn. i presonally like the leather as it lends to the 'traditional' aspect. it won't have a regular place in my pack, just come along on those days that i feel like going that route.
