Two Christmases ago I was given a Buck 110. In the closed position it had a lot of play so I took it back to the place it was purchased from to exchange it. The store only had one more, and it was worse than the one I had, so I picked another knife instead. Fast forward to this week. I was in St. Cloud, just outside Minneapolis and decided to visit Cabela's. While there I thought that it would be a good chance to see about picking up another 110. I liked the look of the Pro-Line 110 with finger grooves and decided to purchase one. They had four in stock. The first one I checked out had that same problem. The second one had a little play in the closed position, the other two were good. I asked if I could check out a few of the regular 110s that they had, just to see if more had the blade play. One of the three that I handled had the same problem.

When I say that the knives have a lot of play in the closed position, I mean A LOT OF PLAY. If you shake your hand the knife rattles. Is this something that is common on this model?

By the way, I did purchase one of the Pro-Line 110s. It is a very good knife.

Hmmm. I can't say that I've seen this in new knives, much less with the regularity that you have. My Dad picked up a traditional 110 at Bass Pro about 7 months ago. It locks up tight as can be.

The 110s that I tried all locked up great. It is in the closed position that they were very loose.

I think mine is tight when open, but a bit loose when closed. I don't consider it a problem. It's one of those things I'd never even notice if I wasn't specifically looking for it.

If you have a problem with the 110, I'd call Buck directly. Usually their products are well made. They have a very good customer service department and will be happy to take care of your needs and questions.

This might be a normal issue with 110s. I have a Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110 in S30V. My knife has no play when opened, but has a little bit when closed. It's a little annoying, but I can live with it.

For what it's worth, my 27 year old 110 has no blade play when closed nor when open and locked. I can't explain why you have had so much trouble finding a keeper:(

I have an old 110 from the 60s that doesn't have any of this play either. It has been retired and I have been wanting to replace it for the last couple of years. I was able to find a 110 that did not have the problem and purchased it.

It seems that about one third of the 110s I tried did have the problem to a greater or lesser degree.

I knew I'd read about this before, a bit of searching turned up this thread, with the quoted post below:

JKI,
The wobble is present on all 110/112 in the closed position. The bushing that is used around the pivit pin starts about .005 larger that the blade. This slight gap allows for smooth opening. The lock acts to make the blade rigid when open, but there is nothing to provide pressure when closed. Difference you see in the 2 is pressure variances during the pinning operation. The bushing collapses a little, but is always slightly larger than the blade.

I have over 60 110's and 112's in my collection and i've never noticed any play at all.

I have owned two Buck 110s over the past few years. Both were the standard model. One purchased from a now Out-of-Business local Sporting Goods Store. The other one purchased a few weeks ago from a Wal-Mart in Long island.

Both knives = Rock solid! No rattle, no play whatsoever. I'm sorry your experiences with this model weren't as positive.

Well ... I had to go and dig out my 110's from my carry bag and check them ... they seemed fine ... I had fun ... neat thread.

Both my 110 and 112 have a small amount of side to side play when closed. Not enough to rattle. Neither of them has any blade play when open.
It has always been my understanding that some play when closed is normal tho not all will have it. Enough play that the knife actually rattles can't be right. My 2 cents.

It has always been my understanding that some play when closed is normal...

I found that about fifty five percent of the knives I tried had no play, thirty three percent had a lot and twelve percent had a little. I only tried nine knives, so that is not a very big test sampling. If I get the chance, I am going to check out more 110s so that I can get a better idea of whether this is something commonly found.

Well, I had to go check as well, and it has a blade play as well. Like others, it doesn't really rattle, but it is sure there. I hadn't noticed it before, so it probably won't bother me.

I'm not a big fan of Wal-mart. Don't usually shop there because their customer service is lower than their prices. God help you if you need assistance from a sales associate, or a manager who has the only key.

Still, I got my last Model 110 from them with no rattle.

I may be ignorant of something here, but why does it matter if there is some side-to-side movement when it's closed as long as it's solid when it's open and locked?

It seems like if it were tight enough to be completely tight when it's closed that it would make it more difficult to open.
