Buck 112 question?

Here is my Limited Edition 112 with satin finish S30V blade and cow bone slabs, (scrimmed) with nickel silver frame. DM

Then unlike JB's, my Limited Edition, ram's horn 112 has a brass frame and a 440C blade. DM

WOW! Beautiful 112's you guys have!

I just saw a production 1997 Nickel Silver one go for $63.50 on the bay, in nice condition with no sheath/box/papers....
I was going to bid, but at the end the bidding got fierce.
So maybe not too rare, but they are definately sought after.

The excitement surrounding Nickel Silver puzzles me a little, partly because I prefer the Gold (brass) look. The other reason is there is no Nickel or Silver in Nickel Silver. It is a white brass (Copper/Zinc alloy) that contains less Copper than yellow brass. The only metals that are not Silver (colored), gray, or white are Copper and Gold. Copper alloys with Zinc and Tin yield yellow brass and bronze.
The color Gold is very unique in the periodic table of the elements. I cannot fathom why someone would want a white Gold watch. It looks just like stainless steel. I could get excited about a stainless steel bolster, but nobody makes them. They are too hard to fabricate. So we are left with white brass or satin Nickel plate over Zinc die cast.
I am not trying to dictate tastes, and I wish companies would offer many options so everyone could get a grail, but I am surprised that the jewelry stores appear to be cutting back on their offerings of Gold colored merchandise (solid and plated).
I just picked up a 14kt Victorinox pocket knife to go with the 14kt Gold pocket watch I inherited from my grandfather. I found a 14kt. chain for the right hand pocket, but I am having a hard time finding a chain for the other vest pocket. They are being melted down at a record pace. Gold is the original stainless steel.

JB beat me to posting his. These had some of the fattest stag handles. S30V and of course the rare drop point blades.

You are correct that White Brass does not contain Silver or Nickel. The term white Brass is somtimes loosely applied to the nickel containing alloys but accepted convention is that White Brass is a Brass containing more Zinc than Copper. White Brass is brittle. The names and elemental proportions in this family of alloys is huge and terms are not always uniformly applied. For our purposes, White Brass is not the same alloy as the Nickel Silver used in our knives.

Nickel Silver as used in our knives contains no Silver but does contain Nickel. Basically you can think of Brass as an alloy containing 60% Copper and 40% Zinc. Nickel Silver can be considered a subset of Brass where the Zinc component is cut 50/50 with Nickel.... 60% Copper, 20% Zinc, and 20% Nickel. The Nickel component adds brightness, hardness, and more corrosion resistence. Alloys can vary, I suspect the Chinese cheat a bit on the Nickel content as some of my China Bucks with "Nickel Silver" bolsters are pretty brassy looking.....

You want a Buck 500 series knife. 500 Duke, 501 Squire, 503 Prince, or 505 Knight. Stainless Steel bolsters, at least up thru the late 90's. You can think of the Duke as a Stainless Steel bolstered Ranger with a drop point blade....... :)

I had to go check the date on this 503.....now I am going to pocket carry it the rest of the day :)
The bad news is now I want a 500, 501 and 505 to match it :(

I always notice short term increased activity and price increases on eBay for items discussed in threads like this. People read and learn here then run to the Bay to act on that new found knowledge. Dealers read to learn about what they've got or hot then act on it with sales offerings. Wait awhile, the pendulum swings both ways. If I'm searching for some special variation of something, I certainly don't post about it (till I get one..... ;) ).

Thank you for that info too!
I'll have to wait a bit anyway, since I spent my spending money on a couple knives I wanted for the edc rotation :)
And also some supplies for a couple of the customizing projects I had in mind.
So maybe when it is time to spend more $$ the fervor will be back to "normal"....

Two more 112 with NS-Frame.
The upper one has Corian scales. As I understood
it was offered as a special edition.

Excuse me if I don't get excited about a bolster that has 20% Nickel in it and no Silver and yet is called Nickel Silver. Nickel is not ridiculously expensive. What happened to truth in advertising? We need less sizzle and more steak.
So a few Buck models used to have stainless bolsters. They also used to have 440C blades. The bean counters chased all that stuff out the door.
