Buck 118 D2 Steel

For some reason, when I'd previously read your comment about the double-stamped blades, it didn't register with me as to the significance of that. But it just clicked minutes ago - mine IS one of the double-stamped blades. I'd not originally known the double stamps were atypical for these 118s.

There's some discussion about them in the thread linked 1st below from a few years ago. One of the posts there (2nd link below) mentions D2 118 blades being 'left over' from a special run in 2002 that didn't sell as well as hoped. Apparently, those leftover blades, some of which had the double stamps, have been used for other special projects since then. I still haven't seen any reference at all to pre-2000 118 blades in D2 though.

Thread 'D2 Double Tang Stamp'

I recently had a renewed interest in Buck Knives. As a result, I have been purchasing several. I bought one that was advertised as a 105, but I think it might be a 118 or 121. I am not an expert at determining what I have. Can someone please help me out? What do I have?

Welcome to the Buck forum M MT_Pete . This is a good place to hang around if you like Buck knives.

The D2 118 blades were leftover from the 2002 Family Favorites set which never sold as predicted. The projected run for the Family Favorites 4 knife set was 1,000 but I think less than 100 of the $3,000 sets were actually made. Buck has used the leftover D2 118 blades for multiple projects since then. There was a limited run of 200 in D2 steel for Smoky Mountain in 2014. I purchased mine from that Smoky Mountain run and was pleased that I received one with Buck/Custom stamped...
