Smoky Mtn Knife Works latest catalog has a special run of 118 Personals with D-2 blades for 64.99.It says only 200 are available.I thought some of the members of this subforum would be interested in this.I only have one knife in D-2 steel,a Bob Dozier, and I have no other knife that will keep an edge as long. The catalog # for these is BU8799.

I have one that A member on here got for me ,,the d2 is awesome in every way,my fav for sure, even better than my. Other fav s30v lol.

D-2, tool steel, reminds me of drill bits (steel that cuts steel).

Fresh from SMKW (good spot willis, thank you):

Nice pictures Steve... :)

Thank you for the kind words ITE. I was hoping you would enjoy them.

Sidebar on anvil: I made the qualifying purchase, via telephone, in order to receive the anvil swag. A few days later the cutlery arrived intact without the anvil. I waited a few days them emailed the vendor inquiring about the swag. The next day I received a reply that the item would be shipped ASAP. A week passed. Giving in, I sent email requesting a return authorization. I went to the post office and there was the much anticipated little black anvil.

Had mine for a week+ and I'm really enjoying it. It has a couple grind lines that are off, but for the money this is a great knife. So far I have gotten it sharp enough to cleanly slice paper, but I'm still working on it. The edge seems more toothy than sharp. Very pleased with it so far. I only have 2 regrets - Not had a chance to get out in the woods with it, and I did not know about the anvil you could get when I ordered it.

I did not know about the anvil you could get when I ordered it.

If you bot $100 worth of stuff then you might consider contacting customer service to see about an anvil. There is some confusion about including them in qualifying orders and they are terrific folks to work with.

My D-2 118 is perfect on all fronts. It is so sharp that I bet you that I could shave Chris with it attached to a ten foot pole in high winds even! :D That is pretty sharp.

Here is another D-2 Personal from the good gone days (2012) for comparison to the newest D-2 118. Notice the different tip grind. It was a Special Build Out, web special $45 , with satin finished blade, brass fixtures and charcoal dymondwood handle. A real bargain beauty that sold out in jig time as I recall.

I have a personal made in the 70's with 440c. Bought it when I was a teenager and kept it in the box. It had the flap holster type sheath. I don't think I have used it. I think the blade is awfully skinny. I they had made the pathfinder or special in d2 instead. I guess you can't you just can't please some people huh.:)

I have 2 of the old ones with the flap over sheath. One of them is fairly well used. A real handy blade for deer.

Do you think the 440c old ones would be better in some ways than d2? At that time period the 440c 118's would not have had the Bos heat treat.

yhowser I used a D2 buck to dress out a hog long'bout 2 year ago ...
it wernt shaveing sharp to start with but it did the whole hog and was still sharp in spite of the tough hide
btw
3 dot 110's in 440c were heat treated by Bos...
mostly found in the classic 111
IMHO one o the best 110 production blades
dem 4 dots wernt 440 but some 425 stuff ...

Buck/Custom was accidentally stamped on both sides of the tang so they had to move the D2 stamp sideways along the spine.

You guys are bad influence... I had time for a trip to SMKW and just happened to want this knife. The very nice sales lady said that this was actually, specifically a run made for a company called Blue Ridge. (Blue Ridge, I had to Google them, appears to be a distributor only. I can't fathom why them would have a run made for themselves.) And that SMKW had got 200 knives from them. Take that with a grain of salt though.

Going on to the knife. It is beautiful. I don't often see a knife that looks this nice. While the handle is smooth, it has a shape that should keep the knife in my hand. Almost makes me wish that I was a hunter so I had something to skin with it. It should make for a good EDC blade in the meantime.

"Phenolic Resin" is a hard chip resistant plastic. Think Billiard Balls.........
