I have a Buck (119) Special that I bought in 1966. Although I like the knife overall, I sometimes refrain from using it because of the slippery black, smooth handle. With all the rubber, neoprene, and other non-slip handles available, I like the feel and grip on them better. Is there anything that can be done with those grips?

Try a piece of a bicycle tire inner tube(real skinny) slipped over the handle or some camo tape that most everyone carries in a sporting goods department. I wouldn't permanently alter a nice Buck from the 1960's

According to Joe & Jim (and possibly Scott & Jeff), you have to destroy the old handle to get it off...and you need to drill out the pin to get the pommel off...and even then it's just a thin tang to try to hang a better grip on...

Although if you like the rubber grips, you might be able to crush the old grip in a vise [Joe's advice] to crumble it, and then make up a DevCon rubber grip mold and pour it in and let it harden...DevCon Flexane 94 is liquid rubber; but you need a good mold... :)

I knew a kid in scouts that rough sanded his.
Looked like hell though.

Buy a new one... bead blast the handle?

Buy a can of truck rollon bedliner, dip it in that...
Any of the above suggetions also...

...Yeah...Do what wh4f and BuckaEagleGooserholic said...but be sure it's a newbie from Wally's joint...

buck knives makes a model like you are looking for the model 619 , it is the same as the 119 but with a rubber handle instead of the black phonelic
get one of those and retire the 119 to alter it or destroy it would be criminal  :D

lol, great ideas. I think I already ruined the value of it. You see, when I first got it, I thought it was so nice a knife that I etched my name on the silver part of the butt. I thought someone might steal it.

I have a buck 119 from the 1980's with a factory rubber grip and synthetic sheath. I don't see many of these. Was it some type of limited time offering?

As a matter of fact, this sounds like the dumbest Idea I have ever heard. I don't think the phonolic handle would just crumble away and you would have the pretty tang you were looking for. I think putting the handle in a vise and squeezing it till it fractured sounds extremely dangerous. Try it and let me know how it turns out.

My buddy took his to a welding shop, and he masked off the aluminum so just the black handle was showing, and had them sand blast it with low pressure,it made the best texture i'd ever seen on one,but somebody liked it better than him and stole it off his truck seat along with his hunting pack.
