Whats your opinion of the Buck 119? I am thinking about getting this as a knife for hiking/primitive skills, any opinions for another knife for around the same price? (Under $40) Thanks!

After the 119, then I would get a 105 and a 102 and then maybe a 692!

Its hard to beat a 119 for quality and value!

If you're going the 119 route, you really need two...the plain Jane 119 (aluminum pommel/guard and black plastic grip) for the back country...and the 119BR (brass pommel/guard and Rosewood) to impress the girls... :D

You'll need a 120 to impress your male friends...and a 124 to impress anyone here... :p

SK909...
Like they all have said...get one.
You will like the 119 so much, it will seem like Trax had a crystal ball...you'll find yourself getting the other Buck fixed blades.
Maybe even a 105 for those jaunts around town.

It's an outstanding knife and outstanding value for the price.

If I'm gonna carry a big knife, though.....I'll choose the 120.

I just like the way it looks......and I like the way people look at it.

:D

I have had two, the blades like to snap. My friend broke 3 off inside boars while hunting with dogs. Both mine were broken doing things knives aren't meant to do so I attest to it being my fault. One was thrown by my boss at a huge dead hardwood log, the other tip broke off prying the top off a can of resin.

Cool knives though. Work pretty well

it's a cool knife, handsome and sharp, but i'd get a nighthawk for the woods if you want it to be a buck.

otherwise, there are plenty of other options and $40 or less (mora, bushman, ontario spec plus.)

you should still get it since it's a nice knife, and spend $9-$12 on a mora for woods. If you're willing to live without the leather sheath, walmart sells the 119 with a nylon for $30. you can have both for your targeted price.

as for quality, a friend of mine used his exclusively for game for about 30 years. it's mighty worn down, but still runnin.

My friend broke 3 off inside boars...

That could be a technique issue.

I used to break a lot of knives killing boars, but I found that it was because I was getting the blade caught between the ribs and and the knife would get twisted in the struggle, and......snap.

I found that if I just shoved the knife into the base of the hog's throat and then left it there while putting my finger and thumb in his nostrils and grabbing his tail with the other hand and swinging him around my head.....I wouldn't break a blade (well, at least for the last 27 hogs I've stabbed).

Of course, your hoggage may vary.

good knives are meant for cutting! not throwing or prying! any knife can be broken if treated rough enough! ,,,VWB.

For the money...you can't beat it. Walmart is the place to get the best deal on it.

Be careful, though....you start with a 119 and before you know it you will have a bunch of them!

I would like to see this on video:D

...:eek::eek:...WTF are you doing???...Is this some kind of rite-of-passage thing??? Knife-fighting a wild boar??? Do you wear the tusks on a string around your neck???

Or is this some kind of redneck sport??? :p (Soon to be televised on ESPN: Arkansas Boar Wrestling!)

I gotta tell ya: I thought Womens Flat Track Roller Derby was bad, especially with names like "Fanny Fister", but fighting a wild boar with only a knife... That takes it for this month...

The bad breath alone would knock me out of the fight... :o
