Can anyone educate me on the difference between Buck 119X and Buck 119J?

Thanks!
Mjar:confused:

Mjar,

The X is a year of manufacture code for 1990 I believe. I don't have my list handy but someone will post the year codes I feel sure. You sure its a J? I don't recall that being used for a year code.

The "J" could be a "U", but then it would be sideways to the 119.

It reads:

Buck
119 J (or sideways U with the top of the U pointing toward the 119)
U.S.A

do you think i'm misreading it?
Thanks guys~

Uh...Martha...Why do you need *two* 119's???...

You're not planning on...leaving...one somewhere...are you???

Welcome JAR.You have arrived to the land of Buck.Hope you enjoy your stay. We'll leave the light on for you.The 119 is a very good utility knife.Your X model is made of 425M steel and U has a 420HC blade.Enjoy using them.DM

ChickenTrax~ I have a regular type home (in the city) and a mt cabin. I travel between the two. Want to keep a knife at each and then will have one to travel with....any suggestions? I'm in Oregon, I'll need to check laws, think I need a knife (to travel with) less than 4 inch blade?

I like your thinking Martha! Perhaps consider a nice 110 for the travel between destinations?

An excellent choice! Or maybe a 560...

My personal favorite is a Custom Shop 110, premium steel blade, nickel bolsters, black Water Buffalo scales, no rivets, no jigging, no finger grooves...like the one I ordered a couple years back and which has never left my desk because it's so pretty!!! :p

As a newbie I find it interesting that most folks recommend a folding blade rather than a fixed blade (at least for travel) is this because of size? I worry that the knife won't stay locked open when I need it or will be more fragile than I expect. I realize I won't be chopping down any tree's with it but wonder about the lock's longevity.

What are your thoughts on Fixed V. Folding for travel or other uses?

Thanks for the ideas guys, this is very helpful for me!
Martha:)

Martha, don't worry about that-the first time you open a 110 your fears will disappear with a solid snap.

JD, These are not identical knives. Your 3 line 119 will have a thicker more convex edge, 2) not fully hollow ground, 3)the blade steel is 440C and the X stamped knife is of 425M steel. 4) the number of micarta spacers are different and 5) should have a different sheath, box and paperwork. DM

Thank you! the 3 line 119 has a stainless head vs aluminum on the x. The blade looks wider, less factory edge & does have 2 spacers on top where the x has 1.
Do you know how this indicates the manufacture date?
I have more bucks than I knew and am trying to choose what to let go of.
Again thanks. I'm going to post a question & pics on 105 s tomorrow to see if you and from what I've read others that know so much more, well you probablt know what I mean, thanks

Back in the 70s I explored the majority of the swamps around Tampa Bay and a lot of the Hillsborough River wet lands carrying a 119. I loved that knife for in the bush but I also had a 105 and a 103 that I carried at other times. Some folks prefer the convenience of folders, for others it is about the perception of other people seeing a fixed blade in an urban environment. Personally I prefer a small fixed that I can carry discretely over any folder any day because of the inherent weakness to lateral stress that exists in folding knives, but that's just me. I know my uses, techniques, and experiences. I can't speak to those of others. I am looking seriously at the new Ranger Skinner wondering when those will be available. I really like the looks of that knife.

Buck made changes over the years with those spacers and the year that occured and with that a steel change occured. About 1981. DM
