Hello all, I recently purchased an older model Buck 122 Fillet Knife with a wooden handle in mint condition. I have many other Buck knives, and all the tang stamps are facing up from the handle. This one is upside down. Holding the handle with the blade pointing up, it reads:
BUCK
122
USA
Upside down. Is there are reason of this, and is it a legit Buck knife?...thanks

Buck did make inverted stamped knives for a little bit. I don't remember the years though.
It is probably ligit. Who's going to fake an inexpensive filet knife?

Also, any idea on the year made and steel material. I'm looked over the Buck Date Code Chart and it seems to be before 1986?

Thanks sportingspecialist for leading me to upload a picture.

Those look like one of the Mates. Buck made a series, 122, 123, 124 named the Stream Mate, Lake Mate and Ocean Mate. They came out in
1985. I'll look it up for you & welcome. DM

It is: and they were 125, 123 & 127, Streammate, Lakemate & Oceanmate. They were available in 2 different handles, your wood laminate and brown kraton. The wooden ones likely had different numbers. DM

If you can read this,it states this is the first year for the Lake Mate.1983

It then states the Stream Mate and Ocean Mate coming soon.

Sporting, that's good. My 1985 catalog does Not say New with these models. So, the whole series came out in 1984 for the first time. Thanks, DM

So it is 440C steel and the knife could be around 35 years old. I honestly don't think it has ever been used. I already have different brand fillet knives, in y'all opinion should I put it up to see if it becomes valuable later on go ahead and use it to fillet fish?

I don't believe these knives will be valuable.

According to ebay sales, the prices range from $40.00 to $60.00

Hollow Point, I doubt the steel is 440C as Buck had already made the switch to 425M in 1982 w/ the 4 dot 110. The finger groove 110 was right below the photo of the 123 LakeMate in that catalog. And these came out with 425M steel. DM

I think Hollow's knife is the Ultimate model 122. That may carry a separate history than these Mates. DM
