Buck 124: New vs. Old?

Chris, I have the same sheets and I think all that is correct. Notice no statement on steel type contained in those sheets and they came from an article appearing in our club newsletter Dec. 2006. Plus, remember this model does NOT follow the normal Buck pattern found in the other fixed blade series. The swing sheaths had 2 rivets by 1980 and no longer swing. This is from one I know. Others could be found a year or so earlier. A model with a unusual
history. DM

What do u mean it doesn't follow the other fixed blades? Check it email bud.

I'll email you concerning this statement.
I checked my early model 124 with the lanyard hole and found it has a 3 line stamp on the right side. The micarta is tight grain, with the blocky, squared handle. A magnet will not adhere to the finger guard or pommel. But will to the blade. So, mid 73. DM

Thanks David!
I was bitten by the curiosity bug, and everything I found caused even more questions!
So pre 1980 for the swinging sheaths. That is a good piece of info!

So are the early 73s with or without the lanyard hole?

Early 1973's have the lanyard hole. Late 1973 models do not. This dating is Not well defined. It is what's found in the article and a good guideline for us to go by. I would accept it as fact. DM

I think I'm on firm ground with this date.
Should Evil Eye Earl come up with a different date. I will quickly acquiescence to him as he is well versed on this model. Haebbie as well. DM

Ok so mine should be a late 73 according to what u posted. That's about what I had narrowed it down to.

Okay, this is all perfectly clear. :D So the swivel sheath was used until around 1980. Do we know when it first appeared? And the steel in my VERY EXPENSIVE '124' LETTER OPENER WITH DOUBLE GUARD FOR PAPER CUT PREVENTION is 440C.

yah if it be what ya wants then you did not pay to much .. nice knife

Thanks sharp dude. I figured I'm only going to buy a 124 once, so I might as well get a nice one. I didn't want to look at someone else's dings and scratches.

Off subject guys, good beer great Mexican food at romos in crossville. Tn.

In 1980, I shot a wild boar at Caryonah Hunting Lodge in Crossville, TN. :)

TAH, our data from the newsletter article say the swing leather sheath appeared in 1971 (*) with an asterisk. What this means is he normally defines but it's not here. We could be safe in dating the swivel sheath to 1971 and ending in 80. For some nice round figures. Until someone with firm data chimes in. DM

Not to beat a dead horse, but to keep all the information in one thread, can anyone give a quick timeline for 124 handle material for the standard knives? Phenolic, burgundy Micarta, black Micarta, laminated rosewood?, etc.

TAH, what your asking for is in the data which Chris posted. The article appeared in the Collectors newsletter Dec. 2006. I know we've discussed this before but I'd have to find it as these are popular models.
Phenolic handles with hidden tang 1967-70.
Black micarta handles (of different grain size) 1971-82. Full tang.
Maroon micarta handles 1973.
Laminate wood handles (birch, looks like rosewood) began Dec. 1982. Continued until it was discontinued.
I've seen this material on 1993 & 94 models. DM

For you BCCI Guys, go to the web site, go to the model history page, click on the 124 Frontiersman and scroll to the second page. This will answer your steel/date questions.
