I am thinking of buying a Buck Mayo 172 (TNT), and the biggest complaint I hear is that it uses nylon washers instead of PB. Is this a big deal? Can I mod it with PB washers.

The other complaint is the presence of the "horns" on the handle. Can I get rid of these too, or am I making too big a deal about this.

I haven't been able to handle the knife, so I am trying to go by other users reviews only.

Im not sure about washers, but as far as the handles go, you can really grind anything you want as long as you dont weaken the locking mechanism.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't change the washers, as long as the new ones are the same size.
As far as shaping the handle that has been done and posted here, try a search and see what pops up 'cause I can't remember any more than I've seen the pics--and very nice they were too.

In that particular knife (172), I don't think the washers used are a big deal. They worked fine in the two I owned.

STR dehorned a 172 and enlarged the lock cutout, I'll see if I can find a pic.

It's the lower one as compared to a similar style mayo on top. For me the washers held until it got dissassembled a few times. I definitly go for PB washers, and while I was at it polish themup first with some steel wool and flitz.
