O.K......I didn't really trade a case a beer for this 184, but it did cost me the same.

I didn't have time to do much research before buying it, but I think I did alright.

It appears to be pre-pat. pending. No compass in the pommel though, which confuses me, based on what I've read. No pouch and no Silva compass either. Blade has been sharpened, lots of scratches from the sheath and a few from sharpening. Otherwise, pretty clean. Saw tooth back in good shape, no chips. Stone on back of sheath is intact and hasn't been used.

Here's a couple of pictures......I sized them down to 50kb for you dial up folks, if thats not small enough let me know and I'll shrink 'em down some more......

Appreciate any comments you can offer....Thanks for looking,
Mike

Good deal! I'll bet if that were sent in to Buck they could bead blast it back to new again ;)

For that money she looks GREAT!!!!!!!!!

What a deal! Since I just got my 651 PigstickerI look at Bucks Tac blades in a different light.....

wh4f.....I think this one is sandblasted rather than bead blasted, but I hear you. Might be better just to leave it be....has character...

bead/sand, whatever ;) LOL ;)

Anyway I would leave it as a user as well. You had just mentioned in the first post any comments welcomed ;) I know Buck fixes those babies up to new!

It would be worth more if it were reconditioned, but try using it, let us know how she works!

I didn't know Buck would fix it up, I wonder what they would charge for that service? I guess I could call and find out...... I think the scratches from sharpening would have to be sanded out before sand blasting, they would probably show through.

I don't see my self using it, hell, I don't know what I'd use it for. Probably just gonna stick it in the case and show it off now and then, I'm sure the grandkids will get a kick out of it.

Anyone have thoughts on the blade marking. I've seen several of these in the swamp with the Pat. Pend. mark but don't think I've seen one like this......

Mike

It looks great as is also! Dont worry about the character marks! I would google Buck 184 or buckmaster, there is a whole website devoted to these knives ;)
TONS of info there!

Enjoy it!

I don't see my self using it, hell, I don't know what I'd use it for.

Hmm there is a thread here currently about "Buck for fishing" :D

Mike, we have found that Buck really does know what they are doing when cleaning up a knife. Many of us have had some work done like that on various knives at times and they come back looking near new.

The charge wouldn't be all that much in relationship to the value of that knife.

But,,,character speaks

A difference example is an Empress Trio set that I have that was poorly sharpened. Now that set does need to go back and get cleaned up for kitchen use, as they are just butt ugly as they are.

just saying that there is a diff in what could be an elegant set of kitchen users and a rugged outdoors user like yours. Yours is suppose to be like that, mine arent,,,,just sayin...

Sorry, Rich, but advertising is not allowed in the discussion forums. Joe Houser explained to me you're a newbie and didn't know you were breaking the rules, so I've reinstated you as a member.

Yeh, I hear you. I'm gonna leave it as is, put it in the cabinet, pull it out now and then and enjoy it. After all, it is one of only 60....;).....oh wait, that was a different knife.

porterkids, thanks for the link, that about answered my questions, except why mine doesn't have a compass in the pommel.

Well, I missed the advert., but thoroughly enjoyed the dancing cockatoo....I wonder if he gives lessons...

yes i had been in the forums for over a year with over 2oo post before i read the FAQ threads and that was as i got a warning on some thing...
we are all some times too bussy to read faq but still some times it is the best thing to do..
yes Joe is one heck of a pal ... i am glad to call him a friend!
and we are all newbies at some time!

Dave,

Thanks for the tip, I read the FAQ.....OK, I skimmed them.

I joined up too. The measly contribution I just made doesn't compare to the valuable info I've gleaned from this forum in the last month.

And, I like to see my name in GOLD....(oops, looks more like orange.)

Buck does clean up the 184s. I sent a pretty beat up one to Joe Houser and it came back looking new! I think it cost about $10. Well worth it.

explore184,

$10.00 to clean it up. Sounds like a damn good deal. I'm gonna hold it for awhile, as is. I'm kinda of the opinion that it's better to leave items alone, rather than try to renew them. Thought that it could reduce the value by trying to restore....I don't know tho, maybe it's different with knives. Did you get a certificate or something from Buck stating that they had done the restoration?

Mike

Hey Mike!
With firearms, yeah, the value can be ruined with a refurb but quite often the value of a Buck knife is greatly increased with a trip back to Buck! I have bought knives that had been sent in and I have sent in ones myself. No shame in it whatsoever, either way! Since I like to display, I want 'em showroom new in appearance and most often the ones I have returned have dazzled me upon coming home! Hard use can only be worked so much but a little honest use simply disappears when the Magician gets his paws around the knife! The fee is always nominal too. :)
Do what you want with your knife but don't let fear keep you from considering a round-trip to Post Falls for your ..ah....anchor!

Dave

Dave,
Thanks for the info. I'm gonna take yours and the others advice and have it cleaned up. Since I'm not ever going to use it, just display it, I guess it does make sense to have it looking primo. Should I start the process with an email to Buck Inc., or phone them? Maybe I should wait a month or two till they catch up on all those Custom Shop orders.
