Found a Buck 186 in the mail today. Oh it's the one I won on FleaBay. It has the pocket clip and tool on a small key ring. Very disappointed. When the blade is locked open if you shake the knife it actually rattles it is that loose. The screw is tight. If you hold the knife by the handle gravity opens the blade it falls to the 6 oclock position. The seller does not understand what could be wrong as the knife "Is in new condition" My response would be Junk yards are full of cars in new condition. The knife looks good and no stripped threads.

Do I go to war with a pay pal complaint or hope Buck can rebuild it?

You've obviously had it apart and cleaned it. Do the bushings for the blade and rockerbar look burred??? Does the spring [bar] look bent???

My personal feeling would be not to let it out of my sight... :D

Someone here with a good 186 can tell you what to look out for. If it's complete and not any obviously bent or missing parts, then he may have put it together wrong.

I Cleaned it today. It did not seem all that dirty but when reassembled it does have more tension on the blade. The blade does not fall to the 6 O'clock position. I am thinking someone may have ground the spring bar down a little as it does not butt up to the area on the rocker bar like it should. The blade does not rattle when then knife is locked open. I found no burrs or bends. It does seem to me the blade and rocker bar bushings are a little worn on the inside diameter as when the screws are placed inside of them off the knife. There is in my opinon a little to much play. The knife is better but not 100%.

Has any one tried to obtain bushings and a tension bar from Buck for the 186? Do they still have parts for the 186 a discontinued knife. These parts could be replaced by the user rather than sending it in.

Another thought would be are the same parts used in the 110. I would gladly sacrifice a comm morative edtion to get this 186 to 100%

After reading this i had to run and check mine on the shelf. It also came off the bay around christmas i got it on a second chance offer. After i received it i realized by the feedback traded that the higher bidder had returned it because it had a small scratch on one scale where the belt clip had been put on (not carefully enough) While this is not what i had hoped for when i purchased new in the box (sellers description) It is in otherwise excellent condition and locks up tight and straight
So i would be more than happy to help you part yours out (i need the one side at least) LOL
Or even use as an EDC I use a kershaw g10 i can open and close one handed carry it anywhere and cut almost anything.
The 186 or 560 is the only knives i would replace it with
I have had for years the 560 i have always been tempted to carry but it just looked so nice and peaceful on the shelf it never has got used, and now the 186 and in the future a black 186 to join it

The only thing that put my 560 back in it's coffin from being in my EDC rotation is that fit in the the mit. Wish it was more rounded. Corners are too, well, cornerey.

I would love a 186 jist to have. Like the Buckmaster, I saw the 186 on the retail shelf and didn't like the clip design.

If I knew then what I know now...I'd have a Buckmaster, a 186, and would still have a buffer.

I Am Sure Kicking Myself On This One.
Just Before I joined The BCCI and Started Collecting Buck Knives I sold My Buckmaster.
How Brilliant Was That? The Only Good Side To It Was That I Quadrupled My Investment , But Never Again. FLW LOL

I don't have a 186 to look at, but on looking at this 560 here, the rockerbar spring should be right up to the corner in the rockerbar...I have a 110 apart here, the rockerbar spring is .105" dia x 1.625" long...

I know from the pics that a 110 rockerbar is different from the 186 [no bushing], but the 186 blade and rockerbar bushings *might* be the same, and the same as the 110...Try emailing Joe Houser on your problem...If you don't want to send it in, Leroy Remer should be able to supply you with new bushings, maybe even a 186 spring...

...Hmmmm...Mike wants a 186...

$105+ today; ends tomorrow night...prolly go for...$200+...???...

Thanks for the help! I emailed Joe Houser yesterday and will see what happens. Going to try to get screws as well or at least one 5/8. The little key ring with the tool on it is down right anoying. If the tool is removed the 3/4 has 1/8 of thread sticking out of the handle which is equally anoying. Not to mention this tool and ring is abrasive to the handle when it flops around.

Hey D6O...
How does the clip feel in the pocket?
Recall when I first saw the knife IRL I didn't care for the clip...thinking it was too wide as compared to other pocket clips.
Thinking the 560 is a better alternative. Still don't know why one would need a knife that can be field stripped.

The pocket clip is functional to a certain degree. It does not have any tension to it so if it is in a loose pocket it can fall out if the user becomes inverted. In casual use it should serve the user just fine. It does add a substantial amount of girth to the handle. I have large hands so it serves me well. Someone with small hands may find the girth a bit much. As far as being able to disassemble the knife the only real advantage at this point is being able to give the knife a 100% cleaning and blade swaps. Had buck continued production this fine offering parts could have been replaced at will by the user. This knife and future 186's will serve more as an investment than as a user. I will continue to carry my 560 for everyday use.

$177 and 6 hours to go...13 bids...This one is hot, folks!!! :D

Gooser, you're going to feel bad if you let it go for $177... ;)

Yeah, I know Trax. I already feel bad that I didn't get one off the shelf when I first saw them. :(
That one, the Buckmaster, and the Cowabunga (Kalinga).
Now I'm trying to figure out how to "rob Peter to Pay-Pal" this month cause I want to get a Buck-Fix!!!
Cowabunga (non black), 110DM NS, mint 112FG (nickel would be too cool for school), and a 186 are on my spring shopping list.
When will it ever stop?????? Does it ever????

Nah, I don't think so. But I like that site!
It's knurled...but looks like the OAB from Smokey in that it is a bolt-on that fits with tension on the spine. Not a driller.

The SMKW OAB is knurled too, but on the edge only. I have the tumb callous to prove it :p

Thanks for the link El Pollo Loco!!
