Buck 186 like new

I don't have a 186 to look at, but on looking at this 560 here, the rockerbar spring should be right up to the corner in the rockerbar...I have a 110 apart here, the rockerbar spring is .105" dia x 1.625" long...

I know from the pics that a 110 rockerbar is different from the 186 [no bushing], but the 186 blade and rockerbar bushings *might* be the same, and the same as the 110...Try emailing Joe Houser on your problem...If you don't want to send it in, Leroy Remer should be able to supply you with new bushings, maybe even a 186 spring...

Well I emailed Joe and Leroy with no response! I called Buck today the response was they have no parts for the 186 for purchase. I was advised to mail the knife to them for warranty repair. I tryed to explain to the person on the phone that the knife was serviceable by the user and that the knife came with a tool and instructions for disassemly and assembly. She kept harping on the rivits would be a problem for me that it would be best to send it in. I tried to explain I went to a special school that taught me how to use an allen wrench.

Does anyone know the phone number to Buck in China?

One reason I can think of is that Buck might replace it instead of repairing it...and if you get that girl on the phone who didn't know 186's had screws instead of rivets, who knows what you might end up with... :(

I wonder if the BUCK factory in CHINA produces bayonets for AK47's?

AK-47's been obsolete for decades; even the AK-74 is old news now...The latest ChiCom assualt rifle looks like an AK-74 "bullpup"...Very nice looking... ;)

(I wanted one of those British L85A1 bullpups for the longest time, till I read that the Brits in the last Iraqi war were carrying captured Iraqi AK's because the L85A1 was such a POS) :o

An AK47 is still a prefered weapon in the urban combat arena. I prefer a 11.5 M4 up close and personal and a M40 out to 1000 yards or so. Can't leave out the Galil that's one of my personal favorites as well.

Joe emailed me today the parts needed for the 560 will set me back only $10.00. :) Your right who knows what I will get back if I sent it in. Might get back a new production 186 eek.

The one hand opener on the back of the 186 blade looks like one designed and manufactured by the same guy who designed the knife; Mickey Finn. He holds the patent for the 186 as well as the 184 Buckmaster and the 188 M9 bayonet. I have one of these in a small plastic case with an Allen wrench. The case has a small insert marked Phrobis. I'll dig it out and post some photos.

Found a Buck 186 in the mail today. Oh it's the one I won on FleaBay. It has the pocket clip and tool on a small key ring. Very disappointed. When the blade is locked open if you shake the knife it actually rattles it is that loose. The screw is tight. If you hold the knife by the handle gravity opens the blade it falls to the 6 oclock position. The seller does not understand what could be wrong as the knife "Is in new condition" My response would be Junk yards are full of cars in new condition. The knife looks good and no stripped threads.

Do I go to war with a pay pal complaint or hope Buck can rebuild it?

I just received a 186 new in the box and it is "relatively" loose when open. I can move the blade from side to side slightly with my hand. The blade stays closed when held by the handle, however I noticed that the spring is not as strong as it is on my other folders. There is no evidence that the knife has ever been disassemble and my first reaction is that it may be part of the reason the knife was discontinued. I bought the knife as a collector's piece and do not intend to use it, so I will leave it alone. It opens and closes fine, and the amount of side to side movement is not THAT bad, but it has more that I would tolerate in a new 110. I hope this helps.

It's like winning the lottery! The 186 and the 560 both seem to have a certain amount of play in the blade when locked open. Mine has play from side to side and up and down when locked open. Examination of the blade bushing shows obvious signs of wear. The spring has been shortened. The appearance of the knife looks new. Most likely played with to much. The parts are on the way from Buck. I want both years of this knife. I used buy it now for a 560 with BG-42 my old everyday 560 will be disassembled an be coated black and reassembled by Buck if they will do it I will get parts from the link below

My personal feeling would be not to let it out of my sight... :D

The above comment was good advice although I was skeptical.

When made it home from work today I noticed a box blowing around in the yard next door. The folks next door moved to California so the house is up for sale and has been for almost two years. The realty company does nothing as far as upkeep on the lawn so yours truly has to do it. So I pick up this box and walk to the trash can out back reading the box as I walked. I did not walk very far when I noticed Post Falls, ID then I rolled the box on it's side to see my name and address. Given the fact that my regular mail man is on vacation this week the temp must have just left it on the stairs and the wind took it.

The parts have set my 186 back to like new condition. The parts replaced were the blade bushing, rocker bushing and spring. I am indeed a happy camper now. Might just have to go postal on the mail man as I have two 560's inbound.

Thanks everyone for the help!
