It looks like the 189 Intrepid II was made from about 1998 to 2002. It had a MSRP of about $178 although they sold for much less than that I am sure.
If the handle is wrapped in para chord, that is after market.

Received my Buck 189 Intrepid and 651 Nighthawk yesterday 
Too cool for school.
Here they are in a pic with some other hefty big Bucks for scale.
What I found interesting is that the OAL of the 189 is 11 3/8" and the 187 is at just 10"...there is only 1/4" more of belly edge on the larger 189 Intrepid.
I'll tote the 189 for awhile and see how I like it compared to the shorter 187 that I have EDC'ed more often than not the past few months.
As for the 651 Nighthawk. I'll probably just bring that out for my next beach assault landing on Guadalcanal or wear it at the next Renaissance Faire as a sword

Cool collection of fixed Bucks Goose. That 651 makes everything else look little!
