Buck 301 or Case Stockman?

Maybe you're right, Voltron. I guess at my advanced age I figure if I get 25 years out of a knife I'm well ahead of the game. ;)

Besides, I'm just gonna end up leaving 'em all to you knuckleheads and I probably (but not definitely) won't be worrying about what you do with 'em after that. Then again...;)

Wait, you're leaving your knives to us knuckleheads? You mean I get a knife too!! AWESOME!!!

Case will still fix the knife even after 25 years. However it will be for a nominal charge and fixed with current production parts.

WAY ahead of ya.... :D

You know, I always wondered about this. Case, Leatherman, etc, if you sent it back to them after the warranty, would they say NO!!? I didn't think they would, but wasn't sure what the procedure was. Glad to hear they will still take care of you.

Both are good knives, Case has more variety in their stockman knife offerings. One suggestion is to decide if you want stainless or carbon steel blades (Buck is stainless only) then go from there.

+1 on everything Scott wrote.

Why not try out a Buck 371? It can be had for around 20 dollars, and fit and finish is top-notch!! Looks good too, with it's wood handles.

That appears to be a good value for the money.

For those of you who haven't done so, now might be a good opportunity to read the guidelines posted in a sticky at the top of the forum page. They are there for a reason and it will go a long way toward keeping this forum on track.

Both are great knives...I have just never been able to get really sentimental about a Buck with black scales and a stainless blade.

One of only two knives I've ever lost was a Buck stockman. I bought it used at a flea market for $10 and had it for about a year. It cut a LOT of hay bales, and whittled a large pile of shavings in that year's time. It was always a pain for me to sharpen though, and I didn't really miss the knife that much when I lost it---------other than feeling the pain of losing a knife.

I hear ya, Connskinner. That's why I usually buy the wood handled Bucks. Something about the black plastic scales that just seems so.... tactical maybe? I don't know. I've had the black handled Bucks, and functionally they were as good as it gets. However, they were like SAKs. A GREAT knife, and a lot of bang for the buck (no pun intended), but seems to be lacking something.

There's plenty of classic, traditional black handled knives (synthetic and otherwise) out there that have been around since our grandfather's days. No need to be throwing around those epithets. ;)

Yes there are, and I feel quite traditional carrying many of them. There's also many people who feel quite "traditional" carrying a red plastic handled SAK. Just something about that Buck that to me makes me agree with coonskinner.

Well, now I know just what knife to leave you. ;):p

AH HAH HAHA!! I was just playing. The Black handled Bucks are ok. I meant the..... uhm.... mother-of-pearl knives. Yeah. Those feel crappy. You know, those really expensive, well made knives? Yeah, they feel lousy. I would hate to end up with one of those.
I mean, I would really REALLY hate that.
Like really.
:o

methinks he doth protest too much...

I had a quick reality check while perusing the "Classic Fullsize Folding Hunter" thread and stumbled into 1fartsmella's 90+ year old Olcut Union folder with candystriped celluloid handles (page 2). To my eyes it looked more like a limited edition Case collector knife than an antique (other than the patina and obvious signs of age). Just goes to show that "traditional" is at least partly a state of mind. Someday the SAK might be made of some a combination of recycled milk jugs, compressed hemp, and some other material that's supposed to decompose if the knife is accidentally dropped and lost (I hope I'm gone by then!) and the basic red handles we all take for granted right now will actually be "classic."

Good point, 52100. Thinking about the exchange I had with Blues made me think the same thing. Much of it is a state of mind. Black to me equals tacticals. Sure, there are other colors, but for a long time, tactical, one handed, locking, partially serrated blades had a black plastic handle. Again, not all, but it's what comes to mind, you know? Same goes for traditionals. While there have always been black handled "traditionals", to me, traditional is wood, bone, pearl, stag, etc. They are yellow, brown, natural off white.... things like that. I just always associate black with modern. Not saying there isn;t one or the other, just what comes to my mind. I can see how, when my kids grow up, and with all the new technology that will have come out by then, they will view red handled SAKs as old school, traditional, the type of knives their parents and maybe grandparents carried.
I guess it's all relative.

You funny man! Make me laugh!

I would go with the Med Stockmen. The 301 is a tank for sure. However, depending what you do. You may not need a tank or it's weight. I would really choose a Case with bone handles and CV. The Buck just don't have it up with Case when it comes to fit and finish.

God Bless

I like 420 stainless vs. Case tru-sharp. Other than that, you will do fine with either. Both are great, high-quality knives.

I just bought two Case knives. One is 2008 production, and the other 2009. Both have boxes that say "Limited Lifetime Warranty".
