Question for you fellas...

This is my first Buck other than my BG-42 bladed 110 I bought some years ago.

Anyhow, I noticed that the pin on one side is way proud of the black delrin scale. Enough so that you can get your fingernail under it.

Is this a common flaw with these knives?

Otherwise the knife was pretty much acceptable...

...Came pretty sharp for a production knife. Grinds were adequate. A bit off here and there but nothing I'd lose sleep over.

Just a hint of movement in the master blade (side to side) but nothing I'd have returned it over.

So, let me know your experience if you would...Much appreciated.

Blues,
I would not call it a common problem with Buck, but sadly Buck"s QC is not where it needs to be and has been discussed previously in this forum. For this reason I am very hesitant to buy new Bucks sight unseen.

hmmmmm...

By pin, I assume you mean the pivot pin for the backspacers? If so, the backside (non-shield) of the pin on my 301 (stamped 2004) sticks out just a hair more than the other side. But not enough to get a finger nail in to.

Mine came amazingly sharp with just about perfectly centered grind lines on all three blades.

There aren't any major flaws with me knife, but the backsprings aren't as strong as I would like them to be, but I've never had any accidental closings and have whittled with the knife a fair bit.

If it bugs you, send it to Buck, I'm sure they'll fix it up for you.

How are the leaves lookin' in your neck of the woods? Out here in Sylva they're starting to change, but I'm afraid all the rain's gonna knock them off the trees before they're really pretty.

Good luck with the knife whatever you decide to do.

Thanks guys.

I did talk to a very nice gal at Buck Customer Svc who is helping me with this so that I don't have to deal with the vendor (which is not a knife company and wouldn't be able to cherry pick one on my behalf).

She did mention that it "is" a pretty common issue, obviously some worse than others.

'pomp, I think you mean the pin for the backsprings and that would be correct.
The grind on the tip of at least one of the blades is a bit off but again, in a user I'd not have made an issue of it by itself. I agree with you that the springs could be firmer.
The fact that it came reasonably sharp makes me happy. I can't stand companies that send out dull knives. I can sharpen 'em up fine, I just don't want to do their work for 'em.

As to the leaves, our home is at 2500' and we have some decent color. Rain has been an issue with losing a lot of leaves. I haven't gotten up to the higher elevations yet but will during the coming week I think.

Great news Blues,
Rest assured Bucks CS is the best in the business.

Thanks again. I'll keep you guys posted.

And as for the CS...I have to agree. I spoke with the same gal last week in regard to a question I had on the 301. Right after that first conversation with her I sent an email in to the company to tell them just how rare, pleasant and very much appreciated it was dealing with quality people like her. (I was happy to find out this evening that they took the time to let her know about it.)

So, bottom line is I've no doubt that this will have a very satisfactory conclusion.

Here's one that is suffering from the dreaded Factory Interruptess disease. Blades unsharpened aslo. Friday afternoon I have met my quota knife. 300Bucks

Another question for you newer version 301 owners...

Does the tip (point) of the spey blade remain above the liner even in the closed position?

In going over the knife a little more closely last night I noticed that the tip was exposed (slightly) and could just be grabbed by a fingertip. (The spey needs a little coaxing to pass and close fully when the sheepfoot is in the folded position but even when fully closed is slightly exposed.)

Yes, virutally every 301 I have since the new 3 backspring layout in 1991 has this.

It looks horrible, but I have not ever had it cause a problem, even in my pocket.

In the last few years, I have had 3 301's with this problem, 2 the Spey blade could not be opened or closed at all, unless the sheepsfoot blade was opened first.

Buck replaced all 3 and the replacements were fine, but it appears to be an ongoing problem.

Thanks for that info BCCL...

I just got off the phone after receiving a call from Buck CS and they'll be sending out a replacement on Monday which they will hand pick for me. That's some outstanding CS right there.

Even better, they were also kind enough to allow me to keep this one as a beater.

Can't ask for more than that.

Blues my I ask what type of knife that is in you avatar? Its nice looking.

You certainly may...

It's a custom made sowbelly stockman by Reese Bose, son of Tony Bose.

Thanks for the kind words.

(Thanks, BCCL...)

Just a quick update. I received the replacement 301 from Buck today. Better in all respects than the original (except that the blades were not as sharp. That, however is easily remedied).

So, hats off to Buck for having quality people, customer service and going the extra mile to ensure that the customer is satisfied.

Good, I am glad you are satisfied Blues, Now I can go back to Traditional forum without feeling like a heel.....300Bucks
