Sorry, but I don't know how to post a poll for people to vote, so unless a Mod wants to add one I'll just count the posts myself.

For someone just starting out who wants a Buck 301 stockman, which handle material should he/she get and why? I personally feel the sawcut black delrin is THE classic, but I still prefer the smooth yellow with the blue anvil shield. HOW ABOUT YOU?!?

I vote smooth yellow, one because you said you prefer it, and two because the yellow is the comfort craft which has softened edges on the bolsters etc. Ya can't go wrong either way though...

The last couple of black 301s I bought had rivets which weren't flush. Not bad enough to send back, but noticeable.

The last two yellow 301's I bought were very nice. Flush rivets, nice snap to the blades. Everything was just right.

I'd go for the yellow, even though I agree that the classic Buck stockman is black.

I have only the 309 (but I'd LIKE to get the Small Stockman too...) in Yellow and Black but I hope my observations have merit: The Yellow LOOKS very nice feels smooth and rounded in the hand but, and here's the quandry, it doesn't grip nearly as well as the black sawcut. If you are using it when your hands are wet or sweating, there's no contest, the black is far better in the hand. This is very apparent in a small knife, maybe less so with bigger patterns.

thanks, Will

I only have black classic 303, and a DW 301 with blue shield, and I bought that 301 because the classic black wasn't available at the time on that site.
Anyway, i think both would be the right answer, but first i would get the black one, my 303 has a feel in hand i can't explain, feels tougher, ready for anything, though is actually quite a small knife.

I would go with Yellow for a new knife person. It has a little more "Flash" that new people like. I gave a yellow 301 to a non knife nut friend of mine is he really loves the look of it.

I have yella, black and cherry dymondwood Bucks. Like Frank mentioned, the rivets on my black ones (310 whittler, 305 Lancer) are a bit proud of the handles. My wood 303 is really nice, but for my 301 I went yella and it's just right!

So far we have:

6 for yellow (smoother, flashier)
4 for black (grippier, more rugged)

I'm a huge fan of the black. It is on my most wanted list. For some reason the buck USA made slipjoints are not really found where I live

now that we got around to talk about it, i need to get a black one as well, and maybe another 303, again, black :D
only then i could consider getting a yellow one...

Jeff,
I recently got my first Buck, first stockman, first knife in many things: a Buck 303 (I'm about to post a thread about it). Since I was willing to get something to experiment many things, I chose the yellow delrin, thus acquiring my first yeller.
Now, I admit I've never seen the black version. What I can say, is that I am surprised of this knife in terms of looks.
I bought to use it, to carry it, to see how I liked it, and chose the yellow delrin as a homenage to American knife traditions...but the truth is, my 303 looks great to me, much better than I expected.
So, one more vote for yeller!

I had to vote black. I was just given one and I love it. I generally would choose yellow but the black is really just too cool.

A Buck slipjoint with any color than black just wouldn't be right. Yellow just looks right on Case knives...
