I voted for the sawcut black because that is the classic Buck handle material. However, since Buck has very reasonable pricing, you can buy both for the price of one GEC and likely have change left. I carry the single blade yellow 302 some and like it a lot; the smooth yellow handle just feels so good in the hand.
If it's one or the other, I'd go with the black for the Buck. For some reason, yellow has always seemed to be a Case color for me, but saw-cut black is definitely a Buck thing.
Both look really good, and both have good arguments to support them. I'm partial to the blue on yellow, but the black is way classic and clearly meant to be put to work.
Put me in the, "Buy Both!" camp, with an added, "then, give away the one you prefer less."
Definitely yellow for a first knife. I do agree that the black is the classic image that comes to mind when mentioning a Buck Stockman. The good news is that you can't go wrong either way.
On a somewhat related note, all this recent Buck Stockman talk has finally gotten to me. I've got a Charcoal Dymondwood 301 on the way.
