Buck 303 date

I have never been real sure what steel Camillus used in their Buck contracts, they usd 420HC alot, and I have the Camillus house name version of the Buck 307 Wrangler and it's 420HC.

Nice find for a Buck :D

After 1973 before 1984. Carbon steel back springs and three brass spacers instead of four. For additional info. read the section beginning on p.505 in Blades Guide to Knives and their Values. Written by Larry Oden.

Tang stamp sizes vary and to my knowledge they don't give any clues to era or year. Just for the chance to stick my foot in mouth, I would WAG, because of three spacers mid 70's. :foot:

Oops, I cleaned my glasses and it looks like the center has two spacers. WAG now for late 70's early 80's. :foot: :foot:

Trax has been known to date Bucks.
They get upset 'cause he seldom calls them the next day though.

Yeah, not bad at all for a (b)uck... I cleaned it up a bit over the weekend, it come out real nice, I might just carry it for a bit.

I thought it had (2) carbon steel springs and (3) brass spacers, am I looking at it wrong? Is it not scale, spacer, spring, spacer, spring, scale?

I was guessing it to be 420 HC, but I didn't know, it sharpens up well.

Thanks

Yes, but.....It looks like from your picture there are two brass liners in center.

If two liners are put together to make one thicker liner it is usually called two instead of one. So you would have handle scale, liner, backspring, liner, liner, backspring, liner. It only makes a difference if you want to get down in the wagon rut with the rest of us collector nuts to worry about model variations and scale counts. In the case of your era 303, one different variation has two liners next to the handle scale with only one in middle. Boring to most everyone but a few hopeless cases.

Well, you might as well welcome me to the wagon rut and sign me up.:o
I'm interested in finding out as much about something as I can, especially old knives. I see in the pics how it looks like a double center spacer, but in real life it only has one. Here is a few shots that show it better.

Good closeups ROM,,,, my two look like yours.

Only true double spacer I could find is on one 309. and just one of those.. But thats a different tread...

Since you guys seem interested, give me a day and I will post pics of the backs of most all 303's from day one to the change to SS. Will try to have it up on 09-22 evening. I know I have one of near era of the photos with two side springs on the off or back side.

I would find it interesting for sure. Even tho I only have just a handfull of 300's. Thanks,, will look for the pics

OK, Here is pic of my best effort, so far, of a complete set of standard 303's. Not all MIB, but l am looking for a couple of better ones to replace. Oldest starts in upper left goes down then up to top of second column, down to last model with brass spacers. Would have liked to put them in a split photo but in interest of time did two. Each knife is in same location in both photos. If anyone sees one I have missed please let me know. These are only the black factory standards. There is still special runs, stags and colored handles but that is another subject.
