Was going to let this thread die but let me step into the pulpit.
Hello Steven, We are glad to have you discuss Buck knives here on the Buck forum. As moderator I must give you a little counsel.
We generally don't go back and drag a thread forward from the far past. Some folks posting in them have actually passed on to the hereafter. Most all of us would prefer you start a new post with your question or information. You could link back to a older posting if anyone was interested in reading it. You would be surprised how many folks look at the old date of the first thread post and pass on by. As moderator I must do stuff like looking at the number of posts you have written and assume you are a new member or have just been a 'lurker' or reader and not posted. Please if you haven't done so, read the rules on talking about selling and buying talk in a general forum. That is the most violated rules here on the Buck forum. Feel welcome to continue to ask Buck knife questions. Now to part two.
Everyone must be careful in making statements that say this is the way it was or that is incorrect because I had a Buck knife that was not like that back 40 years ago. In your case you are talking about the 307 and a good search in this forum will bring up many bits of information about 307s by folks who collected them in the past, collect and study them now. As the above information states, the 307 was never built by Buck but was farmed out to Camillus Knives of New York state. Unfortunately, Camillus records of production were lost when the factory was closed down and auctioned off. Buck, in most cases, does not have good records of those earlier knives. Some collector records say the 307 was introduced in 1974, some mention 1972 and the catalog copy above says "coming after November 1971". Information shown in this thread talks about late 1971. Usually, it takes a spell to get knives out to stores, especially in this case as they would be shipped to Buck and then re-boxed and sent out to sellers. So, I am going to say in the best case you are talking about 72 or 73 for your purchase. But, without the verification of the production card from Camillus I am not going to lay my life on the line. Advertising is sometimes hope rather than fact.
If you are able to view that knife you purchased , does it have a stamped 307 on one side of the tang and the words Made In U.S.A. on the tang of the nail pull side. That is the only Id for older 307s and they were not limited to just a single year. Please feel free to ask more questions.
