So i came across the Buck Companion and it seems like a nice little knife

a bit smaller and undoubtably thinner than a 301, i was wondering if anyone edc's these and what do they think...

yeah my wife is liable to kill me, but i think i got my eye on picking one up next hehe

The 309 is a little smaller than I like, If I edc a 300series knife it's usually a 303. I love the 301s but choose to EDC a 303 if I want a pocket knife.

well i have a 301, just was caught up with the simplicity of the smaller 309

it just looks like it would disappear in your pocket until needed (as Jacknife would say) two blades, american made etc etc
it just ...appeals to me for some reason

My Father really liked his 309.It's a good knife for someone that just needs a small folder.

Nice small folder.

just out of curiousity
does anyone have any comparison pics for a 309 with a 301 and a 303 by any chance

There are only four factory variations of 309s being made today. Standard black sawcut, Dymondwood, Chairman Series and Smooth Yellow scales. From the past, and discontinued, add about 6 or 7 more variations. Leroy, Eric and others throw down a custom special scale once-in-a-great-while.
Here you go for comparison, a set of smooth red scale w/ 301,303,309 and 305.

Oh, what the heck, here is the fancy engraved, Redbone set with the 309 in the middle....you can find a 309 in Redbone or Brown bone if you search long enough.

More modern 309s. The Dymondwood 309 is the old design with squarish bolsters.

I'm on a roll......309 Companion, Made by Camillus for Buck from 1972 to 1986. Buck takes it back to its own factory in 1987 and keeps it going even now.
Long nail pulls only black sawcut scales, colors and bones made by Buck. Variations include: Black sawcut, Red smooth, yellow sawcut, brown bone, redbone w/ and w/o engraving. Grey scale workman series and David Yellowhourse models. Also one run of stag in the 80s. You will find them with Knife,Bolt and Hammer shields and during Bucks early eighties start-up with BUCK shields. Also hundred's of blade printings for compaines and organizations. Order 500 knives and you can have your name on the blade............ More than you wanted to know......

Hope didn't jump in too late in the game. I am a dedicated 309 lover. I bought mine as a divorce present in August 1977. The wife had forbidden me to buy expensive knives (at one time they were considered expensive). I decided to buy a Buck. Out of all the ones to choose from, i just couldn't help walkin out with the 309. I have carried it every day since then. At one time, i went minimalist, and that is all i carried on-duty,hunting,fishing camping etc for almost 10 years. I did call on my Schrade 25OT for deer and larger. I now carry up to 3 knives daily, but if i have only one on me, it will be the 309. A Deputy once asked "why do you have such a little knife"? My partner replied, "That's not a knife, that's his scalpel".
The blades retain approx. 70% of their original metal. This one was manufactured back when Buck was cursed for being hard to sharpen. Once i get an edge, i dress it on a Smith crock stick when needed. Sharpening is a seldom thing.
I seldom find anything that the 309 is not capable of. It has been large enough to do most things, small enough to go in the pocket of swim trunks. I swim with it, carry it daily and sometimes it takes an accidental ride in the washing machine. I have never had problems with any type oxidation.
If you read a few of "Jackknife's" stories, you will find that he knows of others who hold this "Little Big Knife" in very high esteem. regards Henry

no worries. I still planning on picking this up next
but with my wife breaking her leg, me taking family emergency leave (unpaid) and spending the last of my $$ on a boker barlow (which I sent back to boker) i not sure "WHEN" i will get it hehe

oh and i've read most if not all of Jackknife's stories, his influence is definately there ;)

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I love the 309 series. My dad was a 305 guy....and they are great blades.....but the 309 really fits my hand. I'm playing with one as I'm typing......

AF1928, the 309 is a great knife. Why not start us a new thread and show us some pictures of your 309?

That sounds like a great idea!! I will start working on that.....I've got a number of the little buggers lying around, so it'll take me a bit to round 'em up and make 'em purdy for pictures!! Stay tuned.....

This was the first knife I ever bought.. I was 14 (59 now) and bought it with my paper money new.. Paid 18.00 and carried it all thru high school and beyond.. Was in my rfp on the day I was married 36yrs ago.. Still have it to this day!! John:thumbup:

I lost the one I bought not too long ago and miss it a ton. I'm trying to decide if I just grab another new one or go for an older model with the long pull. I know I asked 300bucks what he thinks the better of the older models is, but I can't for the life of me find the post or the message\email!!!! What are all your opinions? Search for an old one or buy new??

I'm partial to the more positive snap on the springs of the older long pull 300 series folders. I have a few long pull 309 versions. That said I have a 1990 309 with nice snappy springs and a 2003 model both close and open the same. My 2007 stag 309 also opens and closes the same as the long pulls. I don't have anything newer in a 309 than 2007 so I don't know if the 309 ever fell prey to the soft "spongy" spring feel that newer 301's have. I have a couple saved photo's of my stag 309 handy.
