I'm surprised how little there is about the 500 in this forum. I'm kind of new to this section having stumbled over from the traditionals forum. I bought a 500 a few weeks ago; 2013 blade stamp and a very nice knife. I bought it because my father in law carried one for years. I hoped to take a photo of the two together but haven't been able to find it at my mother in law's house.

Anyway after I bought it I came here to read up a bit only to find that there isn't much said about them on Bladeforums at all. Nor are there YouTube video reviews...it's almost like it is a secret knife despite being around for years.

I hear Buck discontinued them a while back but would make runs of them every now and again. I also hear that they are reintroducing them to the catalog this year.

Mine seems to have a weak spring; it doesn't like to close all the way when you let it snap shut. It sticks up as much as a quarter inch. Other than that it is a pretty sweet knife. Locks up solid and came very sharp. I've used it for about a week now and am on the fence about wether or not I should send it in for the weak spring or just not worry about it. It isn't much weaker than the springs on my 301 but isn't as snappy as my 110.

A few pics.

IF, as you second photo shows, the tip of the blade is exposed that much when closed, I think you should definitely send it in for repair. It is an accident waiting to happen as is. As I recall, there really has been quite a bit of information on the 500 posted in the Buck subforum over the years. Do a search and I think you will be surprised. And welcome!!

That's how it is when you let it snap shut. It does in fact close all the way with the tiniest effort, and stays shut. I may still send it in, but it's a drag to send in a knife you just bought.

MFG 6-10-2013. $24 @ the factory with BCCI membership. No self-open, old school sheath knife (brought back by popular demand) but fits nicely in the watch pocket with 1" protruding, self-close can't quite make it to the finish line but stays closed when closed by hand.

It may be a little bit of a drag to send them in, but a little tweeking by the guys in the repair shop and that one will be as right as rain. I have sent one back for the exact same reason in the past, it came back with perfect closing snap:thumbup:

You should try cleaning out the blade pivot area. start by working your blade back and forth under hot water, air blow dry and add some kind of light oil and again work the blade back and forth a bit and it may just fix your issue!

Also as said above do a quick search of Buck Duke 500 and you will find a lot of information on this site.

I did as you suggest, just before taking the above photo. I used alcohol (which is used to clean knife parts, during manufacturing, at the Buck factory) worked the entire knife in a bath of the stuff, then dried/cleaned/wiped and finally lubricated with mineral oil. No change to the self-close.

Yes, clean it in hot soapy water with a toothbrush for several minutes working it back and forth and this should help. Agreed, there is much we have posted about this model as it is popular. Some of your information is hear say. The 500 was never discontinued from the Buck plant. It was Always produced as a Eagle Scout knife and other Limited Edition runs for the collectors. It was not in normal production toward retail outlets. It's been produced from 1980 on. DM

I have several Dukes and have not experienced this closing issue except after cutting up an apple and the juice got in the pivot. Thus, causing it to become sticky and resisting to close. Hot water and soap fixed it and I keep it oiled with mineral oil. Here's the one I carry weekly. DM

I'll give the cleaning a shot. If that doesn't work I'll probably carry it around a while to see if it loosens up a bit. If not it looks like it'll have to go back to Buck.

If I send it back ill send in my 110 too, for a bit if a spruce up. Thanks for the advice, and especially for the photos. I always like seeing nice ones, especially if the scales are different or custom.

This is my first Duke 500 I hope there will be many more to keep this one company .

This build-out really appeals to me probably because it's so similar to the 112 to me .

Rig, Your Duke looks just like the Heritage Duke.? Just without the red spacer. Humm, I like the Duke as it's not similar to the 112. Perhaps with a 3" blade. DM

Another Buck that ist not offered often. 30 have been made.
The laser engraved Picture shows Chuck's Bel Air.

Whoa, Haebbie, I've not seen one of those. Chuck's 57 Chevy's I have but not that Duke. Thanks, DM

Send it in!! I have sent a few over the years. They have always impressed me with their work. Just go to their website for their address then read and follow their rules. You will not be disappointed.
