Buck 500

I've run across that thread. It made me wonder about the bolsters so I checked with a magnet, and I really don't think it's stainless steel.

The cleaning with a toothbrush seems to have worked. It's no longer gritty at all during opening, and closes just fine. Thanks for the good advice!

Glad to hear your Duke is now closing with no issues. Yes, a magnet does not always adhere to certain stainless steels. I believe the frame on a Duke is stainless. DM

Huh. I never would have thought that some steels didn't attract magnets. Weird. In any case I've been carrying this knife for ten straight days. Maybe I'll give it a shot at the "one knife for a year" challenge you see on the forum every now and again. Seems like a solid contender.

My wife and I did carry a drop point 110 of 425 steel solely for a year and found it could do 90% of our cutting chores without much quibble. Which turned out to be a tall order. There are some occasions where a longer blade is needed. DM

It's getting hard to resist one of these, even with my obsession on downsizing my collection.

How are the lockbars on these ones? Are they flush when closed, or do they dip in at the pivot like the other 500 series knives?

I guess one can find some that do and others that don't. I have the entire 500 series of early knives and none dip. Then I've posted a recent photo of a Heritage Duke and it doesn't express this malady. DM

David,

Just my luck then, I guess.

I like the idea of a 112 sized knife with a drop point blade instead of the clip. One of these may find their way into my pocket eventually.

They are worth it, I would not sell them back to Buck for double what I paid for them, I like the 500 that much.

I had time to dig out my girl's early English script stamp 501, a late 1970's model and the lock bar on it does not dip. She liked that size so, I got her one some years back. It's been thru the mill but still works. DM
