Buck 500

That's a great looking model. Unfortunately, I've never come across one first hand. Are they similar in size to the 112?

Once Buck changed the 500's blade shape, by bringing the belly up to meet a straighter spine. This gave the blade more usefulness and eye appeal. DM

I actually prefer the older blade shape, closer to the rest of the 500 series.

Yes, they're pretty much identical in length, but thinner and significantly lighter.

^^^ Thanks VTer...sounds like I should check one out in person. And I should probably bring money when I do...

Checkout plumberdev's photo in this thread for a side-by-side comparison.

I have to say, if they ever add the 500 to the Custom Shop I'll be ordering a 500 to keep my in-process CS 501 company.

Been carrying this Micarta Script 500 for a bit.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the bolster shape change? I used to have a 425Mod vintage one (picture below) and I seem to recall that the front bolster flared out just a tick. It acted something like a guard or lateral finger grove. The older Micarta 500 doesn't have that at all.

I really think of the older blade shape as being more of a Zulu-style spear point - something beyond a drop point. The tip on mine (which may have been reground to repair a tip) is so low that it's at the center line of the blade. I've been finding that it's a really useful shape for shop work. Like my ancient Ulster camper, it's great at scoring cuts. The tip drills well. But it's not as good with food as my (now gone) 425Mod one.

Have there actually been 3 (or more) blade shapes? Here's my 425Mod vintage one (blade was in process of being thinned when this picture was taken). I think the current one have even more belly, no?

I like the linen Micarta a LOT more than the birch or birch Dymondwood.

Buck enthusiast best buddy back home has an older model which is what sold me on the Duke, and I definitely prefer the more belly blade for looks and cutting. Here's my 500 and 112 together. It holds true same size but the 500 is thinner as mentioned...
