Buck 501: Telling S30V and 420HC apart?

That's an interesting answer.

If the answer is that S30V is too fragile to endure being stamped like 420HC, maybe it indicates a problem with S30V.

It also answers the question asked by the person who started the thread.

How do you tell the difference between S30V and 420HC????

One is strong enough to be stamped and one is so weak it can only be marked with a jewelery engraver.

That's how you tell the difference.
 
Hmmmm... makes sense. I guess that is part of the tradeoff, you have to give something up to gain something. S30V holds a better edge but doesn't like to be stamped on both sides.

I wonder if there is enough room to put a tiny steel stamp behind the nail nick on the 501 like the BG42 110s?
 
Okay everyone, It's not laser etch, but it is Etch by some Etching machine Buck has... They need to fix it for it will etch deeper in to the blade... Because my etch blade is way to lite... I hope my next Custom Buck blade looks better... I think they should stamp there blades like they did the 110 BG42 and the 110 ATS blades... :)

With S30V rated as only 46% better than 420HC at holding an edge......I don't see any reason to buy it.

I mean, that 46% adds up to less than half of one deer skinning job.

I'll buy 420HC, spend less money and get a real stamp on the blade.........assuming they don't start engraving the 420HC too.

I guess we'll find out as time goes by.

Hmmmmm.....how about just bringing back BG-42....I'd be happy ;) , then I could live without S30V
