I own 3 of these little boogers and all three are users but I got a idea of getting rid of the cushy green rubber handle and having a green canvas micarta handle made for it instead but I wanted to know before hand if anybody out there has strip off one of these rubber handles and what is beneath? will I hafta drill holes for the new handle? if so what will that do to the heat treatment ? is there a guy here on BF willing to make handles for me for the 639 and if this works out I will do the other two as well, great knife but I am not to fond of the cushy handle.:)

I haven't, but man I always liked those Fieldmates. It was one of my earlier fixed blades many years ago. I don't know what happened to it, but it was a cool knife!

The 639 has a long hidden tang.
You would have to anneal it to drill holes.
You can find them once in a while
with phenolic handles and aluminum
pommels from the Buck Custom shop.

Thanks guys , I looking to do it to one I own not buy another,it such a great blade but the handle is the weak link in my eyes.looking to update it alittle and then have a kydex sheath with a fire loop made for it.
