Today I bought a buck 701 with silver bolster and wooden scales.
It was priced $39.99 I was going to buy it for that, but they could not find the box. I ended up taking the one on display without the box or papers for $25

What can you tell me about this knife?
Would there have been a leather sheath in the box if they had found it? They thought it had a leather sheath, but like I said they could not find the box :(

On the blade it say

Buck
701 ) "Backwards c"
USA

Thanks!

pahl, hi! the 701 stockman was discontinued in the 2001 catalog. The catalog doesnt show a sheath, but looking around, I'd think the 501 or the 500 would fit.The suggested list was 56.00 and by the year mark after the model #, it was made in 1996.
hope this helps,
guy
edited to add price and year.

I got my 701 two years ago, I think when they just stop making them. It came with a box, papers, but no leather sheath. I keep all my boxes in the attic, I guess it makes sense to save them. For $15 dollars less, I wouldn't fret too much.

I know it is a fairly big knife for putting in your pocket, but I have never seen one sold with a leather sheath.

(My blade says BUCK, 701U, U.S.A.)

Hi guy g and peter78
I don't know that I really wanted a sheath or not for it.
I was more interested in knowing if they came with factory sheaths or not.
If the catalog does not show a sheath then I guess they did not.
I was kind of wondering when the guy at the store said the box probly has a sheath in it.
I was thinking being a pocketknife style it probly did not, but what do I know.

If they had come with a sheath from the factory I probly would try to locate one just to have.

I don't know what it was about the knife, but when I seen it I just had to have it. I really like the look of the wood scales and it seems to fit my hand nice.

Thanks for the info

I had been looking at the 700 series for about 5 years before 2001. I never saw any with leather sheaths. I had a hard time buying them because of the price, but once they stop making them I decided to get off my butt and buy them.

How many differant models are in the 700 series?

I know they had a few different ones in the shop I was in.
I think I remember a 703 and maybe a 705.

Watch for an article on the 700 series which is scheduled for an upcoming Buck Collectors Club newsletter. I think it is scheduled for the June issue. There were five models in the series: 701, 703,
704, 705 and 709. I think you will learn some things from the article that are not common knowledge about this series.
I believe the only time the 701 was offered with a sheath was when Buck's Custom shop produced the knife with stag inlays and provided a open top pouch type sheath in brown leather. I cannot recall that there was ever a standard factory 701 with a sheath. The knife is similar to the 307 Wrangler in that the size of both knives is larger than many people feel comfortable carrying in the pocket but yet is on the small side for a sheath. Besides, pocketknives are for the pocket, not a sheath, right?

I signed up last weekend :)

Thanks for the info on the 700 series.

I'm looking forward to getting the Buck Collectors Club newsletters.

I always wondered why the 700 series was a different shape than the 300 series. Seems like it would make more sense - from a business standpoint - to use the same frames and blades, and just vary the handle material. Personally, I'd love a wood-handled 303.

I'm really looking forward to reading the article on the 700 series as I have really come to like the 701 as a EDC knife.

That is correct. I have had my 701 in my right front pocket now for ten day's. I don't mind the size at all for pocket carry and I really love the size of the handle and the blades on the 701.

701 with stag inlays
I would really like to see one of them.
Does anyone have a photo they could post or email me?

Thanks!

700's were a brainchild of my father. He wanted a beefy knife with heavier blades and bolsters to withstand some harder use. They were also a little heavier in, and harder on, the pocket

The 701 never came with a sheath although we did jury rig some things for people who asked for them. I do remember some sheaths for some of the custom ones we did in early 80's.

Hey Pahl, I got a 701 in stag. You can view it on my link below. Beautiful knife. It also has a leather sheath.

Later,
Alex

I just got done looking at them. Very nice, thanks!

So I understand that this thread is age old and I'm a newbie to the forum but I ran across a Buck 701 in my dads garage . He passed away in December . The thing is in pretty good shape other than a small bend in the end of the pen blade and it's missing it's shield . Dang glue gave up I guess . So , a couple questions ,...Helllp ! Where might I be able to obtain a shield to glue in place and any advise on straightening the bent tip ? I'd sure hate to snap the thing as it did belong to my dad and I'd really like to give it the love and attention it deserves . Any and all suggestions are much appreciated .
My first post here .

R RancherinAz I'm sorry for your loss. I have a couple of shields that I don't remember what knife they came from. I'll send you one, if it might match.

Thank you David and Bastler for the replies . Much appreciated .
Bastler , the one on the bottom of your photo looks exactly like the one that should be there . Lettering is what I believe came with this since the blade is stamped with the script type font . From what I'm gathering there was a one year transition where the blade was still stamped in script font and the shield went to block letter , then the blade also went to block letter the next year . So that would be wonderful to have allowing me to bring this knife back to its former glory . Pause .....
I just went to measure and it looks like the one you have is about 5/8 inch long and the cutout on my knife is closer to 3/4 inch .
Sigh . So the one you have must have come from a smaller knife . Unless it's me looking at the photo wrong . Dang . Yeah , just measured the height . The one in you're photo looks like 1/8 inch tall where as the cutout in mine measures 3/16 . So other than it being probably just a tad smaller , that's exactly what I'm after . I guess I could put it in there a put filler around it but sigh ....
I really appreciate both your responses and thanks for the warm welcome .
Dave

I measured the shield with a micrometer and got 0.585 in. long by 0.154 in. wide. Let me know if that helps and if you want to give it a try. You could contact Buck warranty and repair and tell them the history of the knife to see if they can help. Their service is top notch.
