I am not an expert on knives. I just happen to really like some buck knives over others I own. Probably stems from my father giving me an engraved Buck 55 when I was young.
I also like some USA made switch-blades. I am not fond of the Italian Stiletto style.
My current EDC is an after market modified Buck 110 Auto. I use my knife frequently to snip occasional things and even to cut my meat at dinner. (to my grown daughters horror)
I was engrossed with the possibility of a Buck made switch-blade. When they came out with one I had to have it. I bought the Buck 898 Impact. Here are some of my observations:
PERSONAL Pros:
- The knife is solid in quality.
- Much smaller than my current EDC. Easier to carry in my pocket.
- thin but easy to hold
- Solid / quality construction
- S30V blade
- Buck made
- 'Buck' is easily read engraved on the blade
- Purpose built switch-blade
- Putting the blade back in is a little easier than the lock on a 110/112. Just press the button and put it back.
- The clip is very tight (as it should be). I have a hard time clipping it to kakis. It would be easier to clip to jeans.
- Price was lower than I expected. MSRP was $220 but I bought it for $139
Cons:
- The hole on the blade is cosmetic. The blade probably came from another S30V blade they have for another knife.
- the blade is a drop point. I love a clip like the 110 and 112.
- the knife back edge is open versus closed in. must get used to that
Overall, I like it and plan on using it as my EDC for a while to see how much I like it.
