Buck blade steel

Can someone tell me the difference between ATS-34 and 154CM - as in the Tempest or 296 knife?

Not much, if any. They are pretty much the same steel, just called different names in the US and Japan.

I have 2 Bucks with ATS-34 blades and they are really nice.

Same composition. Made by different companies. Maybe by different processes. I have a hard time keeping that last one straight.

The names are specific to companies, not countries.

ATS34 is specifically made by Hitachi Metals.

154CM is specifically made by Crucible metals.

They are basically the same composition. Possible differences in trace elements due to different sources of raw materials.
