Just wondering if anyone knows what the tang looks like? I am thinking of re-handling this knife, but am not thrilled about tearing off the existing rubber? handle not knowing what to expect. It resides in a nice pouch sheath that I made, but the handle material doesn't really go. Any help - pic's or drawings - would be wonderful.

hi ruger
are you sure thats the right model number ?
i am guessing you mean the 477 if thats what it is i am not familiar with that model but probably someone here is
i would think the rubber would be desirable as it makes for a good grip wet or dry unless of course it is damaged

Yes, sorry 477BK. The knife is a user, and I'm a tinkerer. I think it would look nicer with a different handle. It may be marginally less grippy, but I have a lot of fixed blades with wood handles. It wasn't an expensive knife, nor do I think it will be collectible in the future. Wondering if the rubber handle is molded in place with holes in the tang, since there are no actual visible fasteners.

yes i am guessing it is molded in place , it looks basically the same as the 475 mini mentor as you can see from the pic there is two pins holding the scales on so i think it would be easy to cut the rubber off
i think out of all of these the burlwood is my favourite

Thanks BM#10! I just happen to have some Aboyna Burl I picked up at a guns show a while ago that might look fine.

Well, I removed the handle last nite. I did it carefully, and will be able to epoxy it back on if I have to. I don't think I'll be able to apply scales, since the tang is substantailly thinner than the original grips, but I have some ideas.

when you say thinner you mean the width of the tang rather than the thickness ?
if there is a couple of holes through the tang you should be able to put on scales , if you look at the pic i posted the 3rd and 4rth knives have scales that are smaller than the tang and i think it looks good
course mine are just for show but on yours you could do some filework to add a custom touch and extra grip for use

thanks jim i got it now
well then it would have to be a one piece handle thats hollowed out or a two piece that has channels cut into them

Poor wording by me, sorry. It's as wh4f says. The width of the tang is thinner than the rubber that was on it. I have some ideas, and hopefully they will turn out nice, otherwise I'll have to epoxy the rubber back on. :barf:
