Buck Custom Shop -- not impressed

Christiantrevor, good looking knives, with silver bolsters! I'm glad your bolsters came out pretty good.

Makael, thanks for your offer. That's very kind of you. If the Buck people are too busy to get back to me, it's okay. It was not my intention to make a big deal out of the issue, and I was just trying to find out if others have gotten knives like mine and whether it's normal. It seems many people don't see an issue. Even though the finishing was a surprise to me, the functioning is perfect. At least the bolsters are all dished, not just one or two. :)

I just received an email from Robert at Buck with the response from the Quality Control Manager: “The bolsters should not be dished or concave. The bevel to match the wood to the bolster is ok, but it looks improperly sanded to me.” The Manager asked that I send the knife directly to him and he would take care of it right away.

That's the quality service you get with buck knives.anyone can have a bad day or miss something on the job,and Buck is very good at keeping customers happy.

They took care of me! All you folks who said they would do so were right. I got the knife back today, and the bolsters look very nice. They are not perfectly flat, but they don't have the severe dishing that draws my attention, and any unevenness looks normal. It's hard to show in a photo. Thanks everybody, and thanks to Buck.

Glad they made everything right for you. I have used their 'sharpening service' and it blew me out of the water. My friend had chipped my 119 doing god knows what, and for the price of return shipping, they completely re profiled the knife, cleaned up any scuffs on the bolsters and all of the scratches on the blade, and put a hair shaving edge on the knife. They also smoothed out the swedge as it was a little rough from the factory. My knife was returned to me two weeks later looking nicer than it did the day it was gifted to me by my father.

Fantastic photos by the way.

Thanks for sharing. They gave you awesome service. No complaints from me neither.

Buck knives and their employees stand behind their products, something a lot of companies could learn to do.I am glad they helped you out!

Hi Buck fans. I don't usually hang around this forum, so this may have been discussed before, but I didn't find any topics using search. I thought I'd ask you people.

I've been familiar with the Buck 110 knives since maybe the 60's and still own a Buck 422 from way back. Recently, for nostalgic reasons, I decided to splurge a little and get a 112 from their custom shop. It's about the same size as the 422 which I like, and I chose S30V with oak handles. When I received the knife, I was dismayed to find that the handle wasn't flat throughout, but all the bolsters were dished, and the wood next to them was beveled. Most of my knife purchases have been GEC production knives, and their bolsters and junctions are perfect. If I recall, even the regular Bucks didn't have dished bolsters. I like the knife in spite of this, but find it puzzling that their custom shop would release this. Is this what can be expected?

I guess I wanted to vent a little too, but thanks for any comments you might have on this.

Do the pins actually attach the scales or are they just decorative. Im thinking of ordering on for my ranch foreman but I know he will use it fir its intended purpose, so it needs to be as tough as a standard version.

It is my understanding that the pins do function as fasteners. That's why I chose to have pins when I ordered the knife (it could be had with or without).

Here's a thread with some info:

I can only assume that the pins actually attach the scales to the handles. I can clearly see the holes inside the liner that they are pressed into. Buck calls them Rivets so there's that too.
