I have several custom shop 110s and they always came with a leather sheath. These are special edition customs. This morning I was about to order an on line build your own custom and was sorta surprised they come with a Black Cordura sheath. An extra $10 for a black or tan leather sheath. Has the custom shop standard sheath always been cordura or is this something new?

Every 110 I've done through the CS, gave me the choice of Synthetic (free) leather (10.00).

I was a little surprised being as my $30 something dollar 110s from my local Wally world came in a box with leather.

I kinda like the cordura more nowadays. You can leave the knife stored in it. The new Buck leather looks cheap too.

Leather has been an option in the CS for as long as I can remember. I never opt for the leather as I have plenty of old leather that looks better. I choose Cordura because it won't tarnish brass if left for a while.

As has been noted, the new 110 sheaths do not seem to be high quality leather.......they seem bottom of the line.

No, the leather just seems stiff and more like a synthetic than real leather. It has a cardboard feel to it.
I suppose you could oil it up and work it to soften it, but I've noticed for some years that it doesn't even seem to absorb oil much at all.
I don't know.
If I wanted a leather sheath I'd probably have my buddy Makael make one of his pretty ones for me.

I agree with Vorp. My 1973 Ranger sheath is made of noticeably higher quality, thicker leather than today's sheaths. It "looks" like leather and absorbs conditioner when needed. I know that I'm comparing sheaths that were made decades apart, but there was cheaper leather available in the 70s that Buck could have chosen. I wonder if the old sheaths were full or top-grain leather and now they are split-leather like many belts are today.

The 110s I've got through WM all had nylon. Around here, you have to go to Menard's or Dick's Sporting Goods and pay 39.99 to get one with leather.

Don't know where around here is but Academy has them with leather for 28.00 if there is one around you. Not boxed, but with leather. just fyi

I think any type of leather, besides saddles, saddlebags, reins, some chaps, are made with split leather. A hide that hasn't been split can in some places be almost 1/4" thick. I don't know if have worked with leather but that is very difficult to make small items with it. The difference is in the chemicals and where the hide came from. A lot of chemicals that were available in the 70's are now regulated to the point where it's not worth it to deal with. So they have to come up with something different. It's still Top Grain leather, it's just processed differently.

Buck should be commended for trying to keep the prices down and continue to appeal to a mass market and maybe people without a lot of cash, but the new leather sheathes are maybe an example at working a little TOO hard at keeping costs low.

It would be nice if they'd start a premium line of knives that's at a higher level than their regular line and would not have any of the recent cost-cutting efforts that annoy so many of us.

last 110 custom i got last year came with black leather standard or included and upgrade price for distressed brown leather. its changed then.

It's been awhile since I've been to the site, I recall the same as you.The distressed brown leather is my favorite. The inside is a very soft suede leather.I think I'm going to order a couple more just to have on hand.

I agree with you 100%. If you store a knife with brass bolster in a Buck leather sheath it would get green verdigris all over it. I store all of the in cordura sheaths and carry in a custom leather sheath.

Nearest one is about 45 minutes south, did see them there at that price, before Christmas, thought that was a sale. I'll remember that!

Leather and brass do not mix very well. Also, unless one is very careful, the chemicals in some leather can pit other bolsters and blades. So, Cordura, though not as pretty, is probably a better choice for a high dollar knife. Just my 2 cents.
