Buck D2 hardness and use

Good evening!

I just ordered a 112 with D2 steel, but can’t seem to find any good information on how Buck heat treats. Does anyone know to what level of hardness Buck goes for with this steel? Also, please share any experiences and pictures!

Ernie, I searched all the way back to Dec. 2012 newsletter when Buck Collectors offered a 110 w/ D2 steel and first mentioned the knife and steel. Though it was shown in the next 3 newsletters no mention is printed about the steels specs.. Nor is the steel named in Buck's catalogs.
So, my guess is that steel is a special run and to obtain that information calling Buck maybe your best bet. I purchased this 110 back when it
was offered and I have used it a lot. Mine holds a good edge and I like it. I suspect they have not changed the heat treat formula. Good luck. DM

Sounds like the SKblades Lil' Jack 112 with D2 Steel. I don't see hardness information on their website. Maybe they will see this thread or you could contact them.

Thanks, hammer. I must have gotten that information from the papers in it's box. My model shows good toughness as well. DM

Thanks for the responses! It is the little jack from SK that I am talking about, I ordered it Sunday and it came in today! Finish is great and the blade came razor sharp, I am very impressed

A nice little knife. I wonder how it would hold up under my uses against corrosion, and how hard it is to fight off the inevitable patina. Been looking at one for a while. Nice score, congrats!

Looks legit. Don't know why there isn't a box logo. Search images online,

It was a limited run of 200 or so by a place called Blue Ridge ordered by smkw, who said that since both sides had the buck custom logo, the d2 mark had to be squeezed in sideways.

It doesn't matter too much to me what the actual hardness number is, the fact is Buck did it right. I have 2 118s in d2 purchased at the same time and both stamps were different but legit. If there is any doubt, take it to a sharpening stone. You'll know that it is d2 then.

I have that same knife and I think it is legit. DM

If it were a coin, the double side stamp would make it a collectors’piece, and prices would be ridiculous! But, the d2 holds an edge just like any proper d2 edge, so I’m not just using mine for shaving or cutting steaks.
