Hi Tidefan,

The Buck "Duke" 500 was introduced in 1978. The burgundy linen micarta was replaced with birch in 1981. So...your knife is from 78-80 time frame. But, I'm no expert on the blade stamps....maybe one of the other forum fellas can narrow this down for you. Oh and this information come from the "Blades Guide to Knives & Their Values" page 511; Vern T, Joe H, and Larry O supplied the info in the article.

...The "script" stamp you show on the 500 is correct for the early micarta Dukes John. If I'm not mistaken they called the stuff Buckarta back in "The Day"...LOL...I have a couple of 'em as well and although their color is called "burgundy or maroon" they can appear almost black. You gots ta hold 'em in the light jus' right sometimes...Great knives with great 440C steel...

Thanks so much for the help. I kinda knew it was 440C by the look as the 420HC looks different. I really appreciate you guys taking time to help, Jim
