Buck Freedom 110/112 Folding Hunter

I have 4 different versions of the 110/112, 2 stock ones...and they don't have that roughness you see in the pic. My other one is a Michael Prater automatic and a Yellowhorse, this part is also smooth/polished no unfinished looks like in the pic. Don't you just hate stuff like that!!! I just got another Buck custom 110, and it again it appears that the space between the bolsters and scales (stag) is excessive. I'm thinking maybe they did this for expansion during cool/hot days. I don't know. My customs from SD never had this problem, only when they started making them in PF. Anyway...

...panmann...I don't believe the knife John has posted his pics of actually is as "rough" as it appears. That's a product of the scanning process. I really wish I could scan like he and Trax do. It picks up every little flaw no matter how subtle it is and shows them, but it's a really quick way to generate a good picture of a knife. I'd bet that knife looks as good as any that Buck makes. Too bad I don't care for the "Transition" myself...I'd buy one for parts if it was reasonable enough though...

Hi All,

Panmann,
Thanks for the info on your 110/112's I thought that perhaps the spacer's thumb cut out may have been over looked during the finishing process.

Darryls,
The scan speaks for itself. The thumb cut out is as ruff as 80 grit sand paper :( . If I grow my finger nails longer I can use it as a finger nail file.....LOL. All of the other brass and SS on the back of the knife have a smooth and shinny polish.

Trax,
Cast surface?????? Maybe, I'll look at it when I'm home again.

...I saw that area in your scan as well John...I thought panmann was referring to the blades' appearance...It would seem that the spacer's condition is something that was missed before assembly...I'd find it hard to believe that it was intended to have that finish as it would be a simple and quick matter to fix that condition prior to assembly... It looks like the spacer was stamped as I can almost see the "breakout" where the punch stopped cutting and the breaking of the stock through the die occurred, and it was just left that way, tumbled and put together...

Take a better look and you all tell me if it's casting marks or grinding marks????

I bought this knife to go into my knife display......so these marks mean nothing to me as you will see it while on display ;) . I know if I wnated it fixed a Buck would do me right   :D

...jb...That looks like a good ol' classic "breakout" signature from a punch pushing metal thru a die where there is a lot of clearance between the punch and die sizes...It's a normal condition during the process...I'd have hoped to see a bit less clearance as that would have left much less of a "rough" condition like we see there now...but the less clearance you have the more often you have to pull the tooling and sharpen it up. I just wouldn't see an economical reason to laser cut a spacer. Blanking quickly and in large quantities would be the way to go. I wonder if there was maybe an operation missed here...  ...I see a progressive die with about an inch and one half lead punching the four holes in one station and through blanking the entire spacer in the other...

Looks like it...

When I did mine, I clamped all three liners together (without blade/spacer/backbone) and roughed & finished them, then assembled the blade/spacer/backbone and final buffed them...it looks here like the middle liner didn't get the relief buffed...until after assembly...if at all...too late! :(

...I still have the pics of your's that I stole for "personal use"... ...LOL...It looks really good or I should say "they" look good...The spacer on your's looks good even before ya polished them out...But like John said...if he's gonna use his on a display only you'd never know it was rough anyway...
