Buck Hartsook Neck Knife Impressions

When I first saw these sold, I was immediately interested. It seems like a neat concept well executed. I'm pretty sure I'd buy one if I was buying any Buck products.

nice review and pics vivi....I've got one too (the only Buck i've ever bought!)....i like it at its pricepoint...the sheath is probably the weakpoiint on the knife IMHO....i also put black electical tape to improve retention.....it arrived a little too loose-fitting.....but it's a cool little blade of s30v.....i've been trying to figure how to stick it in the label of a shirt collar...:D

I just recently got the knife. It does not have a good cutting profile. I think the blade is thin enough, but the edge angle is too steep. I think if Buck reduce the edge to lower degree, that would make them cut much better.

Try using a short bead chain through the bottom of the sheath, and a very small allagator clip from Radio Shack.

Agreed. It sharpens to a good edge, but the geometry remains too obtuse. I plan to sharpen flat to the stone whenever my new stones arrive in the mail.

It's been a good knife to me though. It's been in my pocket a lot recently while out skateboarding. Sometimes I'll skate for 9 hours a day, so I get pretty sweaty. No corrosion issues at all due to this. I was happy about that.

Also, after building up familiarity with the handle, it's more comfortable to me now. I love the thin, light nature of the knife and how you barely notice it in the pocket. Quite a difference from carrying my G10 Cara Cara.

The knife was reprofiled flat to the stone. It cuts much better now. The edge geometry matches the design of the knife better at the more acute angle. Not so much pressure is needed to make cuts now. Due to the decrease in force needed, whittling is pretty comfortable with it now. Might try to get some photos tomorrow afternoon.

Almost passed on this one too until I handled it and looked at the details: S30V that's Bos heat treated! Very high quality blade construction with a reasonable blade grind. I reprofiled it and it cuts like a razor. The design lends itself to lots of carry options including concealed SD possibilities (a simple slit in your belt could provide a great sheath and carry option!). I found mine for $14!!!

Cute knife, but a little too small for my tastes.

GREAT REVIEW!!!

For those with sheath looseness issues, there is a forum member named Deathshead that makes a custom kydex sheath for the Hartsook and it is NICE.

I have one of Deathhead's sheaths for the Hartsook. Excellent work, fast service and even a choice of colors with the kydex. I highly recommend him.

Can you tell us where you purchased one for $14? I can't find one that low on the web.
Thanks

Can post more photos on request. I'm going to clean it up a little bit tomorrow. Either way, if you own this knife, do this to it. You'll feel stupid using the obtuse factory bevel after you experience how well it cuts after grinding the bevel flat to the stone. :p
