Buck Hoodlum

Agree; I didn't think it would damage it. Reinforces my opinion that batoning is a bad idea though! Bummer that I did it as a teaching point for a survival situation, wouldn't have done it otherwise.
Live and learn, so long as I can keep it sharp now I'll keep using it.

Actually it was a pretty good teaching moment when you think about it. You showed how to do something using a tool that isn't ideal for the job but it worked and it showed the potential issues such actions can carry.

Ohen, I think it is a good teaching example as well. That model was designed for batoning and chopping. And when used for this, it incurred damage. Which makes me rethink using a knife for chopping. DM

Show of hands... How many people here have busted an axe handle? Or a shovel handle?

The Hoodlum looks pretty capable for batoning here.

Anything can happen, obviously. Perhaps and errant off angle strike? Maybe a really bad knot? Or perhaps a problem with the heat treat.

I baton with 4" to 5" blades to run a small twig stove (Emberlit). I don't really get the utilty of a 10" chopper but everybody approaches things differently. I'd be pretty disappointed if I had a Hoodlum that bent when batoning. Definitely what it was made for.

I'd feel justified making a warranty claim on that.

Would love to see a picture and hear more about how it bent.

Couldn't agree more. I have seen lots of videos of batoning with little discussion in the video of possible issues. I am not a fan of batoning...yet I do it reasonably often with only small pieces of wood. I wouldn't want to do it in the backcountry with a knife I had never used for that purpose and with out a small amount of practice.

for those of you with a buck hoodlum...
any idea if an ontario sp8 would fit in the hoodlum sheath?
thanks!
