Buck Hoodlum

I remain skeptical.

I have one, but don't use it much. Too many reports of blades breaking....right at the notch. Are all the reports from the first run of 50?

I have the earlier "Hoods Woods" version and it's lived through very hard use. No reason for me to be skeptical.

I have one and really like it although I did have an issue right out of the box. The handle scales were loose and a couple of the screws were stripped so could not tighten them. I sent it back into Buck and they rectified the problem without question and sent it back fast. I have put it through its paces but nothing to stupid some batoning but not into anything wider then 4 inches. It is a very capable knife and I say get it.

Well I'm no survivalist but that notch is in a terrible place. I do analyze stresses in metal and that notch better be very useful because it weakens the metal a lot. Saw teeth would certainly be more shallow than that notch and the stress concentration factor is very dependent on depth. (a little deeper is a lot worse) Paradoxically having a bunch of saw teeth wouldn't be worse than that notch just because there were more of them. The saw tooth knife would still only break once, those saw teeth wouldn't all add up.

Ron Hood sounds like he knows what he is doing, I'm not saying the notch is useless, and if Buck will replace the broken ones God bless them. But it weakens the blade a bunch.
