UPDATE: (Aug. 4, 2000)
Today I received the Buck Intrepid II that I had ordered earlier this week.

I am a VERY "Happy Camper"!!!.

This is one SWEET knife, as it is VERY STOUT, VERY SHARP, VERY well-made, fits my hand well, and has GREAT balance.

...Just ANOTHER satisfied Buck Knives customer...

(July 31, 2000)...I JUST bought a Buck Intrepid II Knife, model 189T (the one with the 6.75 inch Tanto blade), that I'm waiting shipment on.

(August 6, 2000)...I JUST traded for ANOTHER Buck Intrepid Knife, model 187T (the one with the 5.5 inch Tanto Blade)...

Does anyone here own one of these knives that can give me their impression of this knife, and the sheath it comes in?

(I have never seen one [other than pictures], or handled one, but bought it based on the quality of Buck Knives, in general.

Just in-case, it looks like:

SOMEONE MUST own one, and have a comment about it (and its' sheath), that they can "share" with me...

Well, Ive got one! I really like mine, Ive never had the chance to use it camping yet, But I did give a heck of a workout on just some hikes through the woods. Did a lot of chopping & hacking and it didnt even begin to dull on either side.
The sheath gives a few different options for individual carry, as you can see by the back side here. I adjust mine so the blade rides as high as I can get it.
As for the handle, nothing at all wrong with it...I just prefer a cord wrapped handle. The cord I used is much greener in color, these are just bad picture's.

kdarmy,

VERY NICE handle wrapping-job! That looks great.

Is your Intrepid the large, or the "small" one? (I can't really tell by the photo.).

Its the large one. The smaller version has an all kydex sheath. The large one here is kydex too, but it also has a nylon type outer cover. It seems to be very well made.

I have one I carry at work. I have been able to use it to cut a large plastic bumper off a car. It seems like it can hold up to just about anything you do with it.

I'd buy one if a drop point or clip point model was available. Anyone know if Buck intends to produce one?

devnull,

You COULD buy a Chisel-Point Intrepid, and take a grinder to it to make your own drop-point style blade.

On the handmade versions of it (the U2) I have the blades waterjet cut into the chisel point version and from that I can make all the other different points (clip, spear, tanto).

Kit Carson,

WOW! What a pleasure to "see" the guy that designed my MOST FAVORITE fixed-blade knife, here on Blade Forums!!!.

I have both "Tanto" models.

(Being "Left-Handed", I gotta say that the sheaths SUCK, 'tho.

.), but I've taken-out the Kydex "liner" in the sheath for my LARGE Intrepid II, flipped-it over, fixed it back into the outer Cordura sheath via a "Chicago screw", and now it's a "Lefty" sheath.
The sheath for my small Intrepid has become an IWB sheath, via the addition of two IWB belt-loops (on the "back-side" of the sheath), and the cutting-off of the area that the cordura belt-loop was attached.
