Sabos,
It does not hurt the knife at all to engrave it. If you take it to a jeweler or trophy shop, they usually have the equipment for that sort of thing.

Are you talking about engraving a name on it or relief (gun) style engraving? Relief engraving on the blade will weaken it some but if done on the thicker parts of the blade it's OK, all other engraving has no appreciable effect on the knife. I have engraved many Buck knives (literally several thousand with names) and have never had a problem except for misspelling a name now and then. I have a Sawby lock 531 BuckLock that is deeply endraved with scroll work on the bolsters that I carry every day.
Must be fun trying to explain to someone how you managed to misspell their name on their knife...

I know of at least one instance of a guy mispelling his own name on a knife! Way back in the 40's, Hoyt Buck made a really cool looking clear lucite handled sheath knife and stamped it BUCC. The second C was backwards and he went ahead and stamped the K over it. Boy am i glad he did not throw out that knife! You can see the knife on page 97 of The Story of Buck Knives book.

But can you engrave on the handle with no problems? If so, and we're taking it to someone, is there any details that we should give them (like max. depth, etc...)?
