Hi All,

Take a look at these old Alpha scans

I did these before I started taking real photo's. To my surprise I have been watching a live auction that is about to end.....then it hit me.....hay that is my picture, the seller took my photo from photobucket and is using to sell their item! I'll post it's link in a later.

Now I have done some knife photo search's on the web and have found a few sites with fantastic knife photo's. On more than one of these search's I have found sites that have taken our pictures from our posts here on the BF. can other people take our pictures and use them without our approval?

Wow jb, I saw that auction myself. I believe that it was just for a stag version wasn't it?

If it's an image code, it can be copied...I didn't say it was right, or ethical, which is what I am wondering what jb was getting at...
I have noticed some heavy hitters that took down all or most of their images and thunk to myself, hmmm...why did they do that?

If I were a professional photographer, I would be concerned. Then I would take steps like embedding watermarks into my photos and possibly copywriting them...but as a knife nut who just likes to share my passion, and see other knife nuts collections I accept that risk of having my images pilfered. I don't put any tags on my photos that are hosted. I suppose I could make my album "private", but haven't looked into that as I really don't care if someone uses my images.
At any given time, there are usually more guests, than members on the forum...search engines bring the whole world into our little corner...it's just the risk we take by using this powerful medium.

If you go to Google Images and search one of our popular knives, you will usually find some photos from this forum.......yes, our photos.

I think if you can find somebody making large amounts of money from your photos you can sue for some of the profits.

It would have to be a large amount of money to make it worthwhile and I don't think our pics are worth that much......grand as they are.

:D

I would say that on a new knife it wouldn't be quite as bad for the buyer unless it's a stag or unique grained handle, but I have seen photos of vintage knives used on auction sites. I want to know what I'm buying on a vintage knife and I study the pictures and description very well.

I would NOT buy from a seller if I knew it wasn't an actual picture of the knife I was thinking of buying.

I download and store alot of Buck knife images from the internet. Whenever I buy a knife I always download the "sale" images to keep as documentation for the knife. Also, I keep photo libraries of different models and variations of Buck knives that I am interested in, downloaded from eBay as well as this forum for use as a personal textbook and reference material. I'm comfortable with it because it's for personal use.

In the description the seller stated that was not the picture of the actual knife...had you contacted him when you saw it was your picture, or was the description like that originally? It does state that the auction description had been amended...

JB, send a mail to the seller.

"thank you for using my photo to illustate your ...auction. Please send 30 ((your amount)) Dollar to the bank account number: ((your number)) if you don't balance the amount during the next two weeks ((fill in a date)) you'll get the next mail from my counselor. That's not a joke! "

Nobody has the right to use your photos. You have the copyright. And it is your right to reqire money for your work. I would do it. Do you have a lawyer in your circle of frends? Ask him to assume your rights. At least you can be sure, the seller never uses pictures from anybody else again.

Best,
Haebbie

Unless one had previously copyrighted their photos, there isn't really anything they can do. Also making your host site private is all well and good, but anytime you share an image, it's pretty much fair game for anyone to grab.
It's doesn't seem fair, or even right, but it's just the way it is presently.

No, Sit.

You publish a book an somebody takes pictures out of it an uses them for his own things. That is not fair and against each copyright. Same happens in the web too. Nobody is allowed to use photos which doesn't belong to him, no matter where the pictures are published or if they are shown in a not private photobucket file.

They have stolen mine and someone on Bladeforums is even using my avatar picture as their avatar picture.

Haebbie, the pictures we share here are not copyrighted unless we file a copyright claim on them beforehand...by posting them here we are basically putting them out there in public domain. No argument here that it seems wrong for someone else to use them! But to try to stop it is futile...and pretty much un enforceable.

As someone mentioned, post a picture here and it's open season. All I have to do is "right click" on the picture, save it to my computer and there's no need to go to your PhotoBucket album at all. For instance, here's a picture of one of EEE's beauties from last Sundays picture show that I picked at random to illustrate the point. If Ron has an issue with it being reposted, I'll be more than happy to delete it.

I have posted my photobucket link in a few forum sites for other folks to view and enjoy. I don't mind folks saving these photos for their enjoyment. However, I don't like the fact that someone has taken my photo and used it sell their goods with out my permission. I have seen this done before and I contacted the owner of knife that had their photo taken and used on ebay. The real owner of the knife contacted ebay and ebay closed that auction.

This type of action can lead to fraud. I guess I should be happy the seller used my photo to sell his knife. What is funny is the fact that I was watching the auction for a few days before it hit me......hay that photo looks like I have seen it before!

I have always thought that whether copyrighted or not, whether in the public domain or not, the picture is your property if you created it.

If someone uses it to make a profit, they owe you for the use of your property.

The reason it is so rarely done is that the profit in question is usually very small (like an e-Bay sale) and not worth hiring an attorney to file a lawsuit.

So this is not the way it is?
