Buck Marksman may go back on the shelf

I got my Marksman last week and it's an utter disappointment. It has the worst finish of any of my knives (including crkt chinese made). Burrs and sharp edges everywhere. Dings on the blade. The lock takes a lot of tweaking to get right, only to move later resulting in lock rock. Blade snaps back when it misfires. It's sharp, but the grind is very uneven.

First and last Buck.

Oh, they published it after all?
I'm not forming my opinion based on this design, I'm forming my opinion based on this lack of quality control.
Good luck to you too. I hope you don't cut yourself on a part of a Buck that shouldn't be sharp.

This is exactly why Buck has their "Forever Warranty".
Contact the seller you bought it from, or contact Buck directly, or even email Joe Houser who is a member/moderator here in the buck subforum.
Joe is a great guy! http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/member.php/107455-Joe-Houser
They will take care of you. They always do.
Just be nice, explain the problems, and let them know you are overseas.

Mine came perfect... no sharp edges other than the blade, hair popping sharp, perfect grind, fit and finish perfect, flips perfect.

Shoot.... my Marksman 830 came so sharp out of the box, that it slices right through time, space, reality and color spectrums.

That's why "they have great warranty" doesn't offer that much comfort, when the return shipping (and dutys and taxes already paid) would cost more than the knife.

I would encourage everyone to not make a opinion on one example of one knife no matter the maker.
And I wouldn't blame you if you bought, say, a Toyota and the car fell apart the first day and you didn't feel trying their other models after that.

Rare, in my humble experience, to be treated to a Nordic fantasy character's review of a Buck knife.
Apparently this was the wrong forum to voice opinions on Buck knives. Noted.

I think Desert Chris has given you some sound advice & it send back to BUCK, they will take care of it...... :) they stand behind their knifes an products.

Great thread.... and funny too. I am pulling the trigger on the Marksman today. I have the small Vantage Pro in S30V and I love it. Can't wait to get my Marksman. :D

If the knife is truly as bad as you say, they NEED it back to make sure that no others are shipped with these problems; I have bought hundreds of knives from
Buck and never saw any of the problems you describe!! I had one of the first 290's(Assisted opening knives) and not one problem with operation or looks so
the Idaho workers are possibly letting a few bad ones slip thru!! You can put it in a small box and and send it First Class for about $4; I would be happy to
Paypal you the $4 to reimburse you! To repeat, if it is as you say, JOE HOUSER needs to know!!!!

Seriously, you need to contact the company, and voice your concerns...then decide from there.
You shouldn't have to pay duty fees on warranty work, ot replacement.
You might be surprised by how much this company cares about their customers.

I am sure that many of the folks here remember the gentleman in the UK with the 110 issue, and Buck went above and beyond to take care of it.

The design and function of the 830 is different from the average folding knife. It takes a little more hand strength and finesse to get it to function perfectly. With just a little practice it becomes a super fast one handed folder. It is extremely sharp, fast and tight. The clip is the same clip as used on the Vantage folders. It can be bent without breaking to accommodate pockets. I like it so much that I got two.

Seems like reviews are all over the board on this one lol. I got mine about a week ago and love it. I'm not sure if it will replace the vantage pro or the paradigms, but it definitely fits in the rotation. Once I find another priced reasonably, I will be buying a spare.

I have noticed that the bearings like a drop of oil occasionally. Every once in a while a give the pivot area a drop or two of clipper oil (that I use for my dog hair clippers).
That makes it flip super smooooooothly and faaaaaaast :)

I took a bunch of photos, but I thought I'd feel the forum out before I went through the trouble of putting them up online.

Please post the photos! We love photos showing the good, and the bad....
Did you ever contact Buck?

Here is my Marksman right before I went Tactical on that chicken leg :)

Geeze, I feel bad for starting this.

I opened up the clip some on mine (which I don't think is a Vantage clip since the Marksman is wider) and I am happier now that it's not "eating" my jeans.

In the end, after the clip work, I think Buck opened up a great market here. Still love my Vantage though!

Thanks for posting your views everyone. I have been carrying a vantage pro for years now and was debating the marksman. After reading all of this I will just let it slide on past. It seems that it takes a little too much work to get it to work that great as an edc. Its a cool design to be sure though. I personally feel that when companies resort to making "fancy locks" or some new gimmick to a knife, they are losing sight of the purity of a knife. It seems that a lot of knife brands are falling into this trap lately.

I can't sing high enough praises for the vantage series though.

Speaking of which, anyone have a small vantage pro 342 they are wanting to part with. I just lost my backup and can't seem to find any of the old style models anywhere. they have redesigned the handles on the new ones to have g10 inserts into zytel. Crappy!
