Buck Master Series 119 - BG42 or not?

Yep. A trusting mug and chap ;)
One time when Five-0 pulled me over on my scoot, he saw my Eagle Scout card. His question was, "what happened?". Told him I was "deep undercover". We both chuckled. .

i had to read 3x to be sure you did not say under "deep under cover's"! ;) :D
yes the more i read on the ms the more i am confused ..
an over run has bg42 on it, a non over run may or may not?
is not the bg42 engraved ? could it be sent back to have it put on?

i got a 110 MS proto at the 20th
with checked on one side smooth on the other..
was told it was so chuck could see the diff and
how much better checked looked.
was informed diff was that all over runs had smooth both sides..
much to learn ... feel like novice now..:o

I especially love the story where you threatened to cut his cahones off with your lawnmower blade... :p:D:eek:
Wasn't me :) I am ALWAYS respectful to Five-O. Tough job.

I have used the line "beacause I'm not allowed to carry a gun" once or twice when being asked about why I carry a knife. That just ticks irritates them. Don't say that now days. My reply is simply that "I carry that tool in case I need to cut the bead off a flat tire, strip some wire, or cut a tube". The 120 General may be a bit of overkill for those chores though ;)

Scott -

I don't doubt your belief...but how do you tell???

The Master Series was introduced as premium steel blades, BG42. Mine came in a black box marked "119 Master Series 0119-MS-0 Catalog 2751"...I'm just guessing they didn't sneak some 420HC past Chuck ;)

Is there someway to tell the difference just by looking at the blade? I have a Vanguard that was said to be BG-42 by the distributer but isn't marked either way.

Wait a minute....I don't remember pulling you over??? :o  Believe me..if I did I would remember....I think! :o

To my knowledge, there's no visible difference between steels(aside from damascus). Perhaps a Rockwell test could determine, but to stay sure, don't assume it's BG42 because a seller said it's so. The MS in the tang stamp or a visible BG42 stamping is the only sure bet. Too many sellers see a BG42 blade listed for sale and assume because their knife has some similiar features or identical blade shape....it must be BG42, then claim an "honest mistake".

Okay, my M/S 119 just has 119 and year mark on it... So is it a BG-42 or 420HC ??? ??? I have the whole M/S set...

My knife also came in a black "Master Series" two-piece box labelled exactly like yours...

BG-42 is a bit darker or more slate gray if you will, than other steels. Mine is so marked but a very discerning eye can tell to a certain extent. Any other more scientific testing, I do not know since the 'C' could be high on 420 and low on BG as taken individually. Perhaps the colour of the grind sparks.....but then again who would grind on one for mere curiousity?

I actually went to Buck Knives and spoke with several employees about this very thing. They assured me that ALL Master Series (w/ the inlaid medallion & diamond cut handles) were BG42. As stated earlier in the thread, if your 119 has the "MS" -OR- "BG-42" tang stamp, then you have a BG42 blade. Here are pics from the 1998 Buck Catalog with the Master Series descriptions...

That's how I found this one......strongly suspected but not to be proven by grinding.

About 80 were made with leftover unmarked BG-42 and this burl handle.

That would tend to prove that there were indeed some Master's Series 192s that were not stamped BG-42.

Forgetting to stamp a steel designation until it's too late is a fairly common mistake......and you can't stamp it later.

A couple of steel guys have told me this one is likely BG-42. I'm ok with that.

Not to throw a wrench in the mix but there is a MS 119 on an auction site that isn't marked BG-42, but is listed as having BG-42 steel. The listing party writes catalog #2751. The '98 dealers catalog has this # listed as having BG-42 steel. So, I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have to be marked BG-42 to have the BG-42 steel.

I agree.

If it's stamped MS it's gonna be BG-42. So are some other knives that aren't even stamped.

Some jealous people want to take Joe's "generally speaking" statement and turn it into "always."

To take it even farther......sometimes we can't even count on "always." Nothing much is for sure with Buck knives except that they'll be excellent quality (generally speaking).

:)

BTW.......amazing price on that thing--and he got a BID!!!

And thanks for the info......that's going to be interesting to watch.

(Every now and then I'm rudely reminded that there are a heckuva lot of people with a lot more money than me.

:)

The last Buck 110 MS BG42 I watched sell on eBay went for about $500 & one of the 501 MS BG42's went for over $300! MS knives are very hard to find today - they are simply worth what someone out there is willing to pay.

I know that to be true, and it applies to all knives. They are worth what someone is willing to pay... I think that is a golden rule...

I think the golden rule is....."Them that's got the gold gets the knives.....except for a few that go cheap to the very crafty."

:D
