How close is the buck mayo to the Sebbie in QC? What would be better to get? A buck mayo? Or used Sebbie?

Thanks in advanced:D

Even with knives such as these, there is still a bit of a gap in the capabilities of each knife. The Buck Mayo is thinner all the way around, and in the blade. So it will slice better. But because of the thinness it might not handle really tough stuff quite as well. Also because of the thiness it is very light, and sits easyily in the pocket. I dont know who does Chris Reeves heat treat or how they do it, but Paul Bos handles Bucks. I think that the consensus on the QC is that Buck has gotten it very high on the Buck/Mayo, but the Sebbie still edges it out a little.

The Buck/Mayo is nice, and I certainly plan on getting one when I can, but I'd have to say the Sebenza. The Buck/Mayo just doesn't feel as substantial in the hand.

I have a Buck/Mayo, and can conferm that it is certainly a very fine knife. However, it really can't compete with the Sebenza in terms of QC or strength. I've seen posts of other Buck/Mayo owners who have had some pretty major issues with their knives. My Buck/Mayo didn't have any major QC problems, but the edge grinds were somewhat uneven. This, simply, will never happen with a Sebenza. If you want perfection every time, get a Sebbie. My perception is that, at least at the moment, the QC on the Buck/Mayo is a little more hit-and-miss.

I feel that the Sebenza is also a stronger design than the Buck/Mayo. Of course, as others have observed, you'll have to take into account your intended use. The Sebenza, so far as I'm concerned, is the ultimate hard use knife. The Buck/Mayo, though not as strong as the Sebenza, is plenty strong enough for all but the roughest tasks.

Although I eagerly anticipate buying my Mayo (someday), I am sticking with my Sebenza for now. And whereas I agree with everyone else that the Seb is more substantial, the Mayo is much better looking.

I have a Buck Mayo and a sebbie.

The Buck is pretty good, but it's not quite a match for the sebenza.

OK sebbie sounds good, i was thinking of a small classic with blue leather inlay...would that be a good choice?:D

W',
I picked up my first CRK this past weekend. It is a small Sebbie with a unique graphic. The ergonomics are incredible, the strength is unrivaled in this size category and the looks are unparalleled IMO. Can you tell I'm in love? I think my Wife is jealous :D :D . In all seriousness, I think that you will be well served by a small Sebbie. Personally the leather doesn't do anything for me. I lean more toward a graphic or plain.

Chris Reeve does his own heat treat and does not take a back seat to anyone in this respect.

I think I may actually get the buck mayo, I read they are working on the problems, so I will try to get one for my b-day or something...but then theirs the sebbie...then theirs the mayo.... the sebbie...the mayo.... ahh crap I’m undecided again ...I guess ill just wait and see how things turn out and which I want more ...:D

Large Classic Wood inlay. I just picked one of these up from a fellow forumite, and, "Man, what a knife!" Mine has blood wood inlays, and is a perfect match for my custom Kenny Rowe pouch with rattlesnake inlay.

The Buck/Mayo is fairly new and I'm not sure they've been around for long enough to get a realistic measure as to where they stand. The Sebbie has been around for a number of years--with lots of hands-on experience to be reported by many--some love 'em--some don't.

So--If you can wait for a bit more time, you may get a better impression of how they compare. If you need to go with one sooner rather than later, you won't go wrong with a Sebbie.

My opinion:

Buck/Mayo VS Sm. Sebenza = Buck Mayo

Buck/Mayo VS Lrg. Sebenza = Lrg. Sebenza

Careful, once you get that first Sebenza, it's all downhill from there... not that that's a bad thing, well, maybe on your wallet...:D

I'd vote for the Sebbie too! But, no one mentioned that you could get two of the Bucks for the price of one large Sebenza. something to consider.

Joe
