Buck Model 124 information please...

yes the reissue 124 ia quite a knife jest like the orgional one was!
some place i seen pictures of Al and some movie stars holding some 124s!

I believe that was some of the cast of that old T.V. show called "The Virginian."

Page 54 "The Story of Buck Knives" has the stars of "The Virginian" James Drury and Doug McClure holding sheathed Nemos, both in costume, framed by Al on stage left and Chuck stage right. Everyone is smiling, making me wonder what the joke was, and James Drury is fingering his holstered six-shooter.

Facinating, to me anyway, are the two photos, also page 54, showing everyone on the Westinghouse deep submergance vehicle (designed by J. Cousteau & built by Westinghouse) team with unsheathed Nemos in their hands. A bearded man, with glasses looks ready to throw his handle first. The dive vehicle is in the background. Chuck, with dark hair, is in one of the photos. Everyone looks like they are having the time of their life.

Tom Ables book is exciting and wonderful. The photos alone are worth the purchase price. The history is priceless.

What a terrific knife. One of the best IMHO.

Note: Buck published "The Story of Buck Knives." Copyright is owned by Buck Knives, Inc. Are photos from the book lawfully reproduceable here in this forum I wonder?

Hey knife guys, this is my first thread. I myself love buck knives, i have about 8 plus just had one custom made from buck. ihave a total of about 40 Knives, case, schrade, etc. i'm about to buy a buck 124 frontiersman for my collection, it says NIB (new in box) just wondering what they should be going for, it's stamped buck 124 U.S.A.(pre-86) i know of the date codes but just wondering how to exactly date it. i have been burned in the past from someone selling a .112. ranger(74-80) FG. after i revived it, its box was black and said finger groove which the knife was not. and the sheath looked brand new the 112 ta,p on it looks crisp. the hole set looks like the seller just pieced it together. what im saying is that i dont want to spend $350 on a pieced together set. on the 124 that i'm looking at has a beige box which looks like more like the 70's, any info would be great THANK YOU, JOE

That's micarta or "Buckarta" as Buck called it. Joe Houser's history in the Buck Collectors Club says that it was made from '72/'73 until December of '82 when they changed to the wood handles.

Also, Joe says that the change to a one piece box started around '78. The box in the picture appears to be a two piece from what I can see.

Thats great thank you so much,so the one in the pictures i posted are from 72-73...? and do you think in your opinion it would be worth paying $350 for?

Actually, I'd say most likely '73 to possibly as late as '78. The sheath can be an indicator also, but I'm foggy on that.

Worth $350? To some perhaps, that's your call.

You're welcome and by the way, welcome to the forum. I had to look up a bunch of the stuff, it's not from memory, I have little of that left! If I made some mistakes in the dates, I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct me, but I'm pretty sure I have them right.

I am not a collector - more of an accumulator, I suppose. I use everything I buy. That said, I was outbid on evil-bay a year or two back when the LN 124 I wanted passed $200. I finally got myself a 124, a new 124LE, as stated here, for <$129 shipped last month from a common mail order site. They are now out of stock everywhere - but likely due more stock later in the summer - or so they said. I would get my order in at one of those sites - and await new stock. You'll save a ton of money - and have a lifetime warranty, too. Let the gougers keep their wares!

Stainz

PS Perhaps 'gouger' is a bit stiff... how is 'entrepreneur'??

Hello,

I'm hoping to get my first fixed blade soon and started looking at the different styles today. Are there any particular things I should keep a eye out for on the Buck 124?

Thanks
