Came across a cheap 3 piece set on the bay for the Buck Moderne series, just got them today. Some rust spots, scratched blades, they were definitely used. I guess there is still a few I need to get to finish my set out. I know most guys dont even know or collect them so here is a few crappy cell pics for now

(repost) On July 15, 1985, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for MODERNE by Buck Knives.
The trademark registration was cancelled by 1993. The handles are Kraton. The flier mentions that they are made of "incomparable steel".

the handle material is soft, I am afraid years from now it will flake apart from chemicals or oils from food prep. the edges look like they had a horrible sharpening job

That handle material may be more resilient than you think. They are most likely of 425 steel. I don't think they were advertised. In your photo I noticed the previous owner didn't know how to sharpen. Too bad. Still, a good find. DM

I doubt it very seriously. I gave my mother a set of these back in the mid 1980's, I think. I guess other family members got the rest after she passed, but I have one of the paring knives. This set was used, and my paring knife has seen all sorts of use (some not recommended!) for all these years. No issues whatsoever. I like the fact that they have a very non-slip grip so that my wife, queen of Egypt Spazmostis I, doesn't cut her arm off cooking.

Good to have the straight on the handle material. I think that handle material may be the same as that on the 600 series. Which came out near the same time. I have a 603 and that material seems resilient. DM

Its a little soft and cheap feeling for my liking but they wont get much use. I need to find a way to store them properly, current knife block is full

A wooden shelf box is easy to make. Like those that hold the Empress Trio. DM

Wow!
I just got to handle one today! This is a fantastic chef knife design!! It is somewhat similar to my Wilkin's chef knife.
Thanks.

The traditional chef knives does not have that nice swept belly.
What's the blade length?

acutal measured? I do have the 9" chefs, the 217 and 214. Still need to find a way to store them.

Yes, most French Sabatier patterns don't have much belly. The Wilkins or the Henckels. To me the difference between these and the Mod'erne is slight. The spine is at a different angle creating a more belly (look). Still, I'll bend a degree your way on this. DM

Well looks like I have 2 more Modernes going into my collection, hopefully they show up this week for some new photos. Came across 2 other ones on an auction site, but way out my price range, $150 for one and $100 for another. I think thats way too much for some older kitchen knives
