Man I want me a new 500, why did this get discontinued, a very nice knife for sure.

you know why...$$$

it's a business so if a model ain't sellin, it's gonna get retired.

i know what you mean though. i wanted one real bad and after checking out how much they were going for in the auctions, i ended up getting mine through the collectors club.

I would be all over that too. I check every now and then thinking that maybe, just maybe they'll be there.

Well I want one, I think they at least should have it on the Customs page.

Hey Rick, if you are a BCCI member they still have some 500's with S30V blades available, if you are not a member it might be a good reason to sign up for a year to try it out :)

Are you committed to the birch and nickel or would the the brass frame of the 112 do?

Plenty of old 442s available and Im pretty sure that blade will go into the 112.

I have both a 500 and an Ecolite 112 w/442 blade. The 442 blade has more belly and is by far my favorite blade in this size range.

The 500 is a super nice knife and pockets well. But, IMO it doesn't scream "Buck" in the same way the 110 and 112 frames do. For instance, Bear & Sons is currently making knives that look very close to the 500 series.

The knife I would like to see Buck come out with is the 112 Ranger Drop-point. I would suggest using the 442 blade and also doing an Ecolite version.

If you want to stick with Buck and with the look of the 500, I see used 500s regularly. I got mine used.

Rick, if a 500 is what you want, stick to your guns, don't settle for something else. They aren't rare and show up quite often on the auction site, so just hang in there and you'll find one. In fact a bunch of FB's just hit the market although IMO, they're priced too high.

In my opinion, the 500 is a lighter, classier and more gentlemanly (is that a word?) knife than the 112. It's also more pocket friendly, should you choose to carry it that way than the 112 due to it's lighter weight, more rounded shape and thinner profile. In fact, about the only features the two share is their overall dimensions (length wise) and the locking system. See the pictures below of two of my EDC's. As you can also see, the 500's bolsters don't tarnish like the brass 112 does.

I couldn't (and still don't) understand why Buck chose the three smaller versions of the series for the Custom Shop. I won't order one of them, too much money for too little knife in my opinion, but had they offered the 500, I'd have ordered a few of them by now.

Oh sorry! I thought 500 was just a series, not an actual model.

Here's another shot of the 500 side by each with the 112 and 482. See how the 482 blade has more belly? The 442 blade is similar without the (annoying to my eye) hump. I bet a 500 frame with 442 blade would be nice.

I like the 500 also, I just think it would look better if it were to the same scale as the rest of the 500 series.

Also have you ever set it on the 110, the profile of the handle is not much more than a shortened version of the 110.

Could you say more on this?

I've been spending some time doing some carving moving back and forth between my 482 and 112/442. I find the 442 blade to be absolutely perfect for a 3" blade. The 482 is very close but less graceful with the squared off angle on the spine.

In contrast, there's just something about the 500's blade that just a tick off for me - like a note a bit on the flat side. Not enough belly for my eyes. I tend to respond that way to many of the 500s though. Even when new, the blades look like old knives that have been have had their life sharpened out of them.

I would like to hear more by what you mean by "to the same scale"?

Yes. I find they feel similar too.

As far as the belly on the 500 it has more than the rest of the series which is fine but I fine the 501 to be fine.

The 500 is not as sleek so to speak as the others in the slimline series, its kinda stumpy looking
The 500 is more like magnified.
If the length was increased by a xy% so should have the width and length of blade.
The blade is only a 1/4" longer but the handle is a 1/2" longer.
I'm looking to come across a good deal on one and reshape the profile as much as possible to match the rest, but havn't found one yet.

Are you looking to reprofile the handle? To my eyes, it's already too little blade for the handle - thats my problem with it.

Spent some time on a couple of conf calls today and worked on a whittling projects while having my brains sucked out of my head for pay. Went back and forth between my Ecolite 112/442 reblade (thanks a ton Sit!!) and the 500. On some cutting jobs, it's nice to have more handle than blade but as classy as the 500 is, the blade just appears too short. I think it's the lack of belly on the cutting side and the more extreme drop on the spine side. Using the 500 side by each with the 442 (or 482 blade) really makes it more noticeable.

I should say, that for straight usability, the 482 is sort of like a Buck 500 Lite. Truth be told, for usability, the 482 trumps the 500. Better blade by far and the finger grip on the 482 is great. 500 is a much prettier knife, no question. Poor 482 won the ugly lottery.

Hobby horse: The Ecolite 112/442 is even better than I could have hoped. The wide 112 frame is easier than the 500 or 482 on my hands for whittling and the lighter weight makes it better than the 112. This is an incredible knife to use. Pity Buck doesn't make it. I just don't get that.

I like the 500 as well. Heres the Heritage Duke Plumber mentioned with S30V blade at bottom. A good size to carry in pocket or pouch sheath. I like it. DM

Nice Heritage 500 Ya' got there Mr Martine:thumbup:
I really like my Heritage model, when I tried to aquire a paperstone 112, the last one had sold the day before...
I wonder what ever became of this?vvv in reference to the Buck Custom Shop offerings

I am sure those models will be on the site as long as they are popular. I am hoping we will eventually add the 500 Duke as well but well see on that.
I dont have any pics of knives with engravings on them.
For me personally, I would probably go with the 501 because I like a bit larger knife to carry around. I like stag or elk and I know either would look good against the NK bolsters.

perhaps there is a glimmer of hope yet ???

No I definitely wouldn't change the blade, just make the handle profile proportionate to it as the 501.

I keep tossing over the heritage I'd like to get it because it's a different handle, and has the s30v, but the color just does nothing for me, at all.

Personally I like the profile of the Buck lite Max's for the exception of the kick up on top where the handle meets the blade, but it appears it would be ergonomical with it.
